Aptiva - Serial port disabled in DOS window or DOS mode

Situation:
When opening a DOS window or rebooting in MS DOS mode, either with or without modem support, the serial port is not found by the system.
Solution:
1. Right-click on "My Computer" and choose "Properties".
2. Click on "Device Manager".
3. Click on the "+" next to Modems, and remove the AT&T WinModem.
4. Click on the "+" next to Ports.
5. Select Communications Port (COM2) and click on "Properties". On the "Resources" tab, uncheck "Use Automatic Settings" and change "Use Automatic Settings" to Basic Configuration 0002. (Leave "Use automatic settings" unchecked). Click "OK", click "Yes" to force configuration, click "No" to restarting the computer. You will see the modem install now.
6. Select the modem, and click on "Resources".
7. Uncheck "Use Automatic Settings". Change "Settings base on:" to Basic Configuration 0001. If there is a second IRQ in the list, verify that the setting is 10.
8. Click "OK", click "Yes" to accept forced configuration.
9. Close system properties and reboot system.
