CrossBrand - System Hangs With System Partition On 1 GB Fixed Disk

Applicable to: World-Wide

Symptom:
On early models of the 8595 type 1 systems (models OGx, OJx and OKx) and type 2 (model OHx), system hangs will occur when a system partition is created on a 1GB, or larger, SCSI fixed disk.

Configuration and diagnostics run successfully (configuration may give an invalid size for fixed disks above 1GB), but when the system partition (reference disk partition) is created, the hang condition occurs. After the hang, the low-level (advanced diagnostics) format routine also fails (hangs).

Problem Isolation Aids:
No failures occur if the primary fixed disk drive, C, (drive with the system partition) is smaller than 1GB.

Fix:
Retain record H20859 "8590/8595 Processor Module Upgrade" should be referenced for information about a free upgrade (pluggable) module to eliminate the restrictions referenced above. This free upgrade is available until DECEMBER 31, 1994.
H20859 tip has been disapproved, and cannot be referenced now.

Note:
The recovery of the fixed disk may be accomplished by reconfiguring the system without the 1GB fixed disk, installing a smaller fixed disk (the original fixed disk) and installing the system partition on it. The 1GB fixed disk may then be installed and reformatted to make it operational again.
