Servers - Installing StandbyServer for Windows NT

Installing StandbyServer for NT:
These quick steps are a reduced version of the installation. All page references refer to the Standby Server for NT User's Guide. Review the Pre- Installation Checklist/ System Requirements on the other side of this card to ensure your system meets Standby Server's system requirements.

To install the necessary hardware:
1. Install a supported link card according to the manufacturer's instructions, but DO NOT install any drivers from the manufacturer.
2. Connect the machines using the Vinca link cable.

Installing Software:
Windows NT must be installed before Standby Server is installed. See page 16 of the User's Guide for information on domain relationships.

To install StandbyServer on the standby machine: (page 17)
1. Ensure a compatible domain relationship exists.
2. Log on to the target standby machine as a user with Administrator rights on the server and the domain.
3. Insert diskette 1 into drive A:, and run SETUP. EXE.
4. Follow the instructions on the Setup screens.

To export drives for mirroring: (page 18)
5. Run Standby Server Manager.
6. From the Options menu, choose Exports.
7. Select the drives to be exported and click the Add button ( > ).
8. Click OK.

To install StandbyServer on the primary server:
(page 19)
1. Log on to the target standby machine as a user with Administrator rights on the server and the domain.
2. Insert diskette 1 into drive A:, and run SETUP. EXE.
3. Follow the instructions on the Setup screens.
4. Click OK to restart Windows NT.

To configure the mirror between machines:
(page 20)
1. Run Disk Administrator on the primary server.
2. Click the icon for the partition on the primary server to be mirrored.
3. Press and hold the <Ctrl> button and click on an area of free space on an imported drive that is at least as large as the partition highlighted above.
4. From the Fault Tolerance menu, choose Establish Mirror.
5. Repeat the above three steps for each partition to be mirrored.
6. From the Partition menu, choose Commit Changes Now.
7. Click Yes, to confirm changes to the partition.
8. Click Yes, to confirm an understanding that the machine must be restarted to load the fault tolerant driver.
9. Click OK.
10. Click OK to initiate the restart.

Pre- Installation Checklist/ System Requirements:
IMPORTANT: Before installing Standby Server , please read the following information. These conditions must be met before StandbyServer can be installed.

Hardware:
Two Intel- compatible servers must be available, one to function as the primary server and one to function as the standby machine.

Minimum of 20 MB of RAM must be installed in both machines.

The standby machine must have at least two physical disk devices.

The standby machine must have enough free disk space to mirror the primary partitions (other than the system partition) from the primary server. You can only mirror primary partitions on a one partition per disk device basis.

Two PRO/ 100 series high- speed network interface cards for the Vinca link.

Category 5 unshielded twisted- pair (UTP) crossover cable (25 foot cable included).

Software:
Windows NT Server 3.51 or later and Service Pack 3 or later must be installed on both machines.

Both machines must be in the same domain and have a suitable domain controller relationship.

Pre- Assistance Check List:
Check the following conditions before calling Vinca technical support:
- Ensure that there are no interrupt or I/ O conflicts.
- Ensure that there are no Shared PCI interrupts.

When calling for technical support, please have the following information available it will be needed to assess your system's problem:
- Brand and model of the primary and standby machines.
- Processor type and speed (e.g., Pentium 200).
- Type and size of disk devices used.
- Type of disk controllers used.
- Link card and network card types and settings.
