TP 755,760,765 - Configuring the MWave Modem on your ThinkPad

Applicable to: World-Wide

Follow these steps to set up the MWave modem on your ThinkPad:

1. Press 'F1 ' during Power On to get to the "Easy-Setup" menu.
2. Select "Configure".

NOTE: at this point you can select the Initialize icon and reset all MWave, Infrared, and serial port settings to the factory default settings. This includes all settings under the Easy Setup facility as well as some settings under the various windows icons under Windows Program Manager.

3. Select "Serial".

Note: There are five settings (Serial_1, Serial_2, Serial_3, Serial_4 and Disable) for Serial port on the back of the PC and five settings for the internal bay (diskette drive bay) for the CDPD feature.

4. Set the top row "Serial" to "Disable".

Note: The Infrared feature by default is assigned to COM1. If you select COM1 for either the Serial or Internal, you will be presented with a yellow background screen. On the screen will be three icons (see the NOTES below). If you click on OK when you receive the conflict notice. However, Serial_1 will function if you do not use the Infrared feature at the same time that Serial_1 is being used. For example, if you have a serial device connected to Serial_1 and use it at the same time you are performing a transfer via Infrared, a failure will result.

If the you require the use of the serial port it is suggested that you disable the Infrared setting. This can be accomplished by the following:

À Start Windows
À Double click on the ThinkPad Setup group
À Double click on the Infrared icon
À Click on Disable button in the Infrared Device line
À Click on the Save button
À Exit Windows, power off and on to make the new setting effective.

NOTE: If you require the use of a PCMCIA Communication device, disabling the Infrared as above will assign the PCMCIA device to COM1. It should also be noted that the DSP modem will still work at COM2. Furthermore, it is possible to have two different communication programs concurrently running, assuming neither is doing heavy communications, each using a different COM port.

Note: If you set the Serial Port to COM2 the system will lock-up when an attempt is made to use the Mwave modem. When it locks, your only recourse to regain control may be to press the Power Shutdown Switch button located on the rear of the ThinkPad, between the large System Expansion Connector and the External-Display Connector. Use the tip of a pen to press this switch.

Set "Internal Serial" to " Disable " (Unless you are using the optional Internal CDPD modem and then it should be set to the appropriate COM port which could be Serial_1, Serial_2, or Serial_3).

Note: The "internal" option defines modems installed in the diskette drive bay such as the CDPD module.

5. Select 'OK' to save the settings
6. Nothing to set for Modem or PCMCIA power management

NOTES for Serial port settings conflicts:

a) An icon identifying the serial port being set with two arrows pointing at each other with an explosive background. This indicates that you have a conflict. Under this icon the conflict will be identified (Serial_1, Serial_2, IRQ 4, or IRQ 3).
b) Type of conflict:

i) IR (Infrared Port). The system has a special port for communication using Infrared interface. Two ports, one in the front and other in the rear are available. When two systems are placed with their Infrared ports facing each other data can be exchanged between the two units. You can either enable or disable the device. In case you enable the device, you can choose between the front and the rear port and the ThinkPad/Generic mode or Sharp (TM) mode.

Infrared Mode Data Rate Interface
ThinkPad mode up to 1.15Mbps unique
Generic mode up to 115Kbps COM port
Sharp mode 9600bps COM port

When you need to change the configuration (I/O ports, IRQ and DMA) of Infrared port, press Advanced... button.

ii) DSP. The system has a built-in Mwave DSP that supports the audio and telephone functions.

NOTE: The following are set within Windows by double clicking on the ThinkPad Setup group and then double clicking on the DSP Device icon.

a) Mwave DSP
Specify this option if you want to have audio function and/or telephone function in your system.

Note: Reboot the system for the new settings to take effect.

b) Additional audio functions
With this option, you can select Sound Blaster(TM) support or MIDI option. Suitable I/O address, DMA and IRQ have to be set for each to properly work.

c) Telephone functions
Select this option when you use the internal FAX/modem or speaker phone/answering machine functions.

7. Review the communications settings for the modem software. Select highest ranking available setting, Modem type:
a. Mwave modem
b. Generic Hayes-type modem
c. User-defined modem
d. Hayes SmartModem 2400
e. Hayes modem
f. Hayes compatible modem
g. Other (Note: If you select a modem of type "Other," you must include the proper modem initialization string. For most applications, the initialization string "AT&F" will work. See the Mwave Modem on-line help for more information.)

8. Lotus Notes users should download LOTMWAVE.EXE. This file provides Lotus Notes with a Mwave modem definition.
To obtain a copy of this diskette, DoubleClick here : -

9. If you experience a NO DIALTONE Error, reseat the telephone DAA Module. Disconnect the phone line from the ThinkPad and leave the hatch door open.

10. Lift open the keyboard. Slide the blue switch to the left. This unlocks the DAA Module for removal. From the left side of the ThinkPad, pull the black DAA Module away from the ThinkPad. Firmly press the DAA Module back into the ThinkPad to reseat it. Lock the DAA Module in place by sliding the blue switch all the way to the right.

11. If this still does not give you a dial tone, it could be that the maximum REN has been exceeded. The telephone line you are trying to connect to will have a maximum number of devices that can be used on it at the same time. In Europe, this number is usually either 3 or 4. Now your MWave modem will have a value of 1.5, so only UP TO 2 other devices can be installed. To be sure, connect the modem to a DIRECT (no switchboards) line, as close the the point of entry (the place where the telephone line enters your premises) as possible, with no other devices attached.
