IBM IntelliStation Z Pro - Copy command with Windows NT 4.0

Applicable to: World-Wide

When using the COPY command in Windows NT v4.0, an embedded EOF (End of File) marker may be placed in the new file causing the file to fail with the using application. This symptom may occur with any brand of personal computer.

Example: COPY FILE_1.TXT+FILE_2.TXT FILE_1.TXT
This command copies the contents of FILE_1.TXT and FILE_2.TXT into a new file with the same name as one of the original files, FILE_1.TXT.

This scenario may cause an EOF marker to be embedded into FILE_1.TXT. The use of ASCII or BINARY switches have no effect.

In testing with earlier versions Windows NT, PC DOS 7.0 and OS/2, the command functions normally.

To use this command with Windows NT v4.0, enter the command as follows:

Example: COPY FILE_1.TXT+FILE_2.TXT NEWNAME.TXT
Naming the newly created file with a filename different from either of the two contributing files allows the command to function properly.

For additional information regarding this situation, contact MicroSoft Windows NT Technical Support.
