Aptiva - 2134/2176 Planar BIOS/Video Problem

Applicable to: World-Wide

Problem:
Video memory on the planar cannot be set to 2 MB with these RAM configurations:

Bank1

Bank0

0
32 Bit
32 Bit
32 Bit

32 Bit
0
32 Bit
64 Bit

It registers 1MB of Video Memory and the rest is assigned to System Memory.

NOTE: The ability to change the Video Memory is now disabled in the BIOS.

This problem has been seen on a number of systems with UMA (Universal Memory Addressing), including a model 2134-351 - Crystal System with 12MB RAM. Both Mwave and Crystal audio card models are affected.

To further complicate matters, the affected systems can be run in 1024 x 768 x 256 colors, which means more than 1MB being used.

BIOS level - BFL**4H.

Resolution:

The SiS 6205 VGA chip only supports three kinds of memory configuration in the universal memory architecture. The three kinds of memory configuration are as follows:

1. 1M byte/32 bit
2. 2M byte/64 bit
3. 1M byte/64 bit

The Hardware Handbook states that you may utilize other memory configurations. And indeed these configurations will allow the machine to run. However, they may only permit 1MB of video memory.
