Aptiva - 2144 Error finding PROGMAN.EXE when Windows 3.1 starts

Question:
How can I correct a 'System Error Reading Drive D: and Error finding PROGMAN.EXE' message when I try to start Windows 3.1?

Answer:
If you have troubles starting Windows 3.1 and receive an error as above, then you can try the following to get Windows working.

1. At the C: prompt type CD\WINDOWS and press "ENTER".
2. Type E SYSTEM.INI and press "ENTER".
3. Find the following lines in the file:



     [boot] 

     ;shell=progman.exe 

     shell=d:\hyperman.exe

4. Remove the semicolon (the ; char) from the shell=progman.exe line.
5. Delete the shell=d:\hyperman.exe line.
6. Press F4 on the keyboard to save and exit.
7. Reboot with CTRL-ALT-DEL and Windows should load now.
