Aptiva-PS/1 - Are there any guidelines to naming files?
Applicable to: World-Wide
Yes. A file's name has 2 parts: a filename and a period followed by an extension.
The filename can be up to eight characters long. The extension consists of three characters. This is sometimes noted as the 8.3 convention.
Extensions are optional, but they are useful for defining the file type. COM, EXE, BAT, and BAS indicate types of executable programs. Some applications use specific extensions to indicate file types. For example, Microsoft(R) Works uses WPS to indicate a word processor file.
NOTE: OS/2 and Windows 95 support "Long Filenames". This allows the filename to be up to 256 characters.
