Aptiva - The TYPE command
Applicable to: World-Wide
The TYPE command displays the contents of the specified file on the standard output device, usually the display, but it could also be a file or printer. The data will be unformatted, and only text files will appear in a legible format. Other files, like object program files, may appear unreadable due to the presence of non-alphanumeric characters. Characters, such as smiley faces, spades, hearts, and diamonds, are commonly displayed when you use TYPE with a program file.
The TYPE command is entered at the DOS command prompt. The syntax is as follows:
TYPE [drive:][path][filename]
drive: = specifies the drive that contains the file to be typed out.
path = specifies the directory that contains the file that you want to type out.
Filename = the filename and extension of the file that you want to type out.
Global characters are NOT allowed in the filename. You can redirect the output to a print device or file by using the ">" character. For example, to redirect the output to a printer on LPT1, you would enter:
TYPE C:\LETTERS\xxxx.TXT > LPT1
