Aptiva-PS/1 - Changing the color of Windows elements

Applicable to: World-Wide

The color of Windows elements not listed in the Control Panel, such as button text and shadows, and dimmed text can be changed. Primarily, you determine the colors for each item and then edit your WIN.INI FILE to specify those colors.

IMPORTANT: Before you begin this process, make a backup copy of your WIN.INI file. Exercise extreme care when changing your WIN.INI file. Any incorrect changing and/or disabling of values could create a problem in restarting Windows or running its applications. Refer to the manual accompanying your system or ask for assistance from a experienced person, if you have never done this procedure before.

1. In the Main Group window, open Control Panel.

2. Open Color.

3. Choose Color Palette.

4. Choose Define Custom Colors.

5. Using the Custom Color Selector, determine the colors you want for each item. For each color, note the numbers shown for Red, Green, and Blue.

6. Close all dialog boxes.

7. In File Manager, open your Windows directory.

8. Double-click the filename WIN.INI to open the file in Notepad.

9. Find the [colors] section. Modify or add all or any of the following lines by typing the numbers for the colors you chose after the = (equal sign). For example, if you want the face of your Windows buttons to be blue, you type ButtonFace= 0 64 128 where 0 (zero) is the Red value, 64 is the Green value, and 128 is the Blue value. Press Spacebar after you type each color value. ButtonFace= Red Green Blue ButtonShadow= Red Green Blue ButtonText= Red Green Blue DimmedText= Red Green Blue.

10. From the File menu, choose Save.

11. From the File menu, choose Exit.

12. From the File Manager Control menu, choose Close, and then choose OK to exit File Manager.

13. Quit Windows, and then restart.

Note: Additional information about your WIN.INI file is provided in WININI.TXT and WININI2.TXT. Double-click the filename to open these files in Notepad.
