Aptiva - Installing Warp on an IBM Aptiva

Applicable to: United States

The OS/2 Warp Aptiva Update files are available in the OS/2 Forum on American Online and Prodigy.

Because your Aptiva came installed with Microsoft Windows** 3.1, slight modifications must be made to your computer before you can install Warp. There are 6 procedures to follow:

Procedure 1 Determine the model number of your Aptiva
Procedure 2 Replace one of the installation diskettes that came with OS/2 Warp
Procedure 3 Disable Rapid Resume and Read Prefetch
Procedure 4 Install OS/2 Warp
Procedure 5 Run the UPDATE.CMD program from the Aptiva Applications Programs Update diskette
Procedure 6 Setup Rapid Resume (Optional)

PROCEDURE 1 - Determining the Model Number of Your Aptiva

There are several procedures in this update document that you need to follow depending on the model number of your Aptiva. To determine the model of your Aptiva, look inside the fold down door or the sliding panel on the front of your system unit. Locate the model number of your computer.

You should have one of these model numbers:

Model 310 (2144-22P)
Model 330 (2144-24P)
Model 335 (2144-25P)
Model 343 (2144-29P)
Model 350 (2168-26P)
Model 510 (2168-62P)
Model 530 (2144-66P)
Model 710 (2144-82P)
Model 730 (2144-86P)

Please make a note of your model number.

PROCEDURE 2 - Replacing an Installation Diskette

If you are installing OS/2 Warp from compact disc (CD):

Replace Diskette 1 that came with OS/2 Warp, with the diskette that came with this package labeled CD-ROM Diskette 1 - Replacement Diskette.

If you are installing OS/2 Warp from diskette:

Replace Diskette 2 that came with OS/2 Warp, with the diskette that came with this package labeled Diskette 2 - Replacement Diskette 2.


PROCEDURE 3 - Disabling Rapid Resume and Read Prefetch

Your Aptiva came equipped with the Configuration Utility program. This program lets you view and change important information about your computer. You might have used the Configuration Utility to set up your computer to use the Rapid Resume and Read Prefetch options.

>> If you are sure Rapid Resume and Read Prefetch have not been enabled, go to Procedure 4.

>> If you have already set up your computer for Rapid Resume and Read Prefetch, you must disable it before installing Warp. If you have an Aptiva model 710 (2144-82P) or 730 (2144-86P), go to Procedure 3A.

>> If you have any other Aptiva model, go to Step 1 below.

1. Close any programs that you are currently using.

2. Turn your computer off and then on. The IBM blue logo screen will appear. When the a symbol appears in the upper right corner of the screen, press the F1 key. The symbol remains for about 15 seconds. If the symbol disappears, before you press the F1 key, repeat Step 2.

3. The Configuration Utility window appears. The window will say Page 1 of 4.

4. Press the PgDn key twice. The window says Page 3 of 4.

5. Press the Down Arrow key until the Rapid Resume setting is highlighted.

6. If the Setting says Enabled, press the Left Arrow key once. The setting should say Disabled.

7. Press the PgDn key until you are at Page 4 of 4.

8. Press the Down Arrow key until the Read Prefetch setting
is highlighted.

9. If the setting says Enabled, press the Left Arrow key once. The setting should say Disabled.

10. Press the Esc key. A window asks if you want to save your changes. Make sure Yes is highlighted. Press Enter. The computer automatically restarts.

PROCEDURE 3A -Disabling Rapid Resume

For Models 710 (2144-82P) and 730 (2144-86P)

>> If you have an Aptiva model 710 (2144-82P) or 730 (2144-86P) and have already set up your computer for Rapid Resume, you must disable it before installing OS/2 Warp. Go to Step 1 below.

>> If Rapid Resume is already disabled, skip to Procedure 4

1. Close any programs that you are currently using.

2. Turn your computer off and then on. The IBM blue logo screen will appear. When a symbol appears in the upper right corner of the screen, press the F1 key. The symbol remains for about 15 seconds. If the symbol disappears, before you press the F1 key, repeat Step 2.

3. The Configuration/Setup Utility window appears.

4. Press the Down Arrow key until the Rapid Resume entry is highlighted. Press Enter. The Rapid Resume window appears.

5. Press the Down Arrow key until the Rapid Resume setting is highlighted.

6. If the setting says Enabled, press the Left Arrow key once. The setting should say Disabled.

7. Press the ESC key. The Rapid Resume window closes. Press the ESC key again. The Configuration/Setup Utility window closes.

8. The Exit Setup window appears. Press Enter.

Go to Procedure 4.

PROCEDURE 4 - Installing OS/2 Warp

>> If you have an Aptiva model 530 (2144-66P) or 730 (2144-86P) with at least 8 MB of memory on the system board, go to Procedure 4A .

>> If you have any Aptiva model that has 4 MB of memory on the system board, go to Procedure 4B.

>> If you have one of the following Aptiva models with at least 8 MB of memory on the system board, go to Step 1 below.

Model 310 (2144-22P) Model 350 (2144-26P)
Model 330 (2144-24P) Model 510 (2144-62P)
Model 335 (2144-25P) Model 710 (2144-82P)
Model 343 (2144-29P)

If you have any problems during installation, refer to the User's Guide to OS/2 Warp or call the IBM HelpCenter.

1. Insert the Installation Diskette into drive A. If you are installing OS/2 Warp from a CD, insert the OS/2 Warp CD into the CD-ROM drive.

2. Turn your computer on. If your computer is already on, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart it. (If the blue Windows screen appears, press Ctrl+Alt+Del again.) The IBM blue logo screen appears.

3. When prompted, remove the Installation Diskette from drive A. Insert Diskette 1, and press Enter. If you are installing OS/2 Warp from a CD, insert the CD-ROM Diskette 1 - Replacement Diskette. As files are loaded into your computer's memory, you will see messages asking you to wait, followed by a black screen. The Welcome to OS/2! screen will appear.

4. From this window, press the Down Arrow key once to highlight Advanced Installation. Press Enter.

5. When the Installation Drive Selection screen appears, select option 1, Accept the drive. Press Enter. Follow the instructions on the screen.

6. If you are installing from diskettes, remove Diskette 1 from drive A when prompted, insert Diskette 2 - Replacement Diskette 2, and press Enter. If you are installing from a CD, you will not see a message to remove the diskette.

7. Follow the instructions on the screen. If you are installing from diskettes, you will be asked to remove and insert diskettes as the installation progresses. Use the diskettes that came in your OS/2 Warp package.

8. After Diskette 6, you will be asked to reinsert the Installation Diskette and then reinsert Diskette 1.

9. Follow the instructions on the screen. After you remove Diskette 1 and press Enter, you will see the OS/2 Warp logo screen, followed by the System Configuration window.

A special note about Super VGA (SVGA) displays: Make sure that your primary display is SVGA. If you need to configure your computer for SVGA, click on the Primary Display icon. The Display Driver Install window appears. Select Help to see a list of tested adapters.

10. If the information on the System Configuration window is correct, click on OK.

11. The OS/2 Setup and Installation window appears. If the information is correct, click on OK.

12. The Advanced Options window appears. If the information is correct, click on OK. Follow the instructions on the screens until the installation process is complete. Refer to the installation procedures in the User's Guide to OS/2 Warp if you have questions.

Go to Procedure 5.

PROCEDURE 4A - Installing OS/2 Warp

>> If you have one of the following Aptiva models with at least 8 MB of memory on the system board, follow the steps below to install OS/2 Warp.

Model 530 (2144-66P)
Model 730 (2144-86P)

1. Insert the Installation Diskette into drive A. If you are installing OS/2 Warp from a CD, insert the OS/2 Warp CD into the CD-ROM drive.

2. Turn your computer on. If your computer is already on, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart it. (If the blue Windows screen appears, press Ctrl+Alt+Del again.) The IBM blue logo screen appears.

3. When prompted, remove the Installation Diskette from drive A. Insert Diskette 1, and press Enter. If you are installing OS/2 Warp from a CD, insert the CD-ROM Diskette 1 - Replacement Diskette. As files are loaded into your computer's memory, you will see messages asking you to wait, followed by a black screen. The Welcome to OS/2! screen will appear.

4. From this window, press the Down Arrow key once to highlight Advanced Installation. Press Enter.

5. When the Installation Drive Selection screen appears, select option 1, Accept the drive. Press Enter. Follow the instructions on the screen.

6. If you are installing from diskettes, remove Diskette 1 from drive A when prompted, insert Diskette 2 - Replacement Diskette 2, and press Enter. If you are installing from a CD, you will not see a message to remove the diskette.

7. Follow the instructions on the screen. If you are installing from diskettes, you will be asked to remove and insert diskettes as the installation progresses. Use the diskettes that came in your OS/2 Warp package.

8. After Diskette 6, you will be asked to reinsert the Installation Diskette and then reinsert Diskette 1.

9. Follow the instructions on the screen. After you remove Diskette 1 and press Enter, you will see the OS/2 Warp logo screen, followed by the System Configuration screen.

A special note about Super VGA (SVGA) displays: Make sure that your primary display is SVGA. If you need to configure your computer for SVGA, click on the Primary Display icon. The Display Driver Install window appears. Select Help to see a list of tested adapters.

10. At the System Configuration window, click on the Multimedia Device Support icon. The Device Selections and Settings screen appears.

Sound Blaster** [Non-Pro, ISA, or MCV] is highlighted in the Device(s) in System to be installed window.

11. Click on Remove, and then click on OK. The System Configuration screen reappears. If the information on the screen is correct, click on OK.

12. The OS/2 Setup and Installation screen appears. If the information on the screen is correct, click on OK.

13. The Advanced Options screen appears. If the information on the screen is correct, click on OK. Follow the instructions on the screens until the installation process is complete. Refer to the installation procedures in the User's Guide to OS/2 Warp if you have questions.

Go to Procedure 5.

PROCEDURE 4B - Installing OS/2 Warp on an Aptiva with 4MB of Memory

>> If you have any Aptiva model that has 4 MB of memory on the system board, follow the steps below to install OS/2 Warp.

If you have any problems during installation, refer to the User's Guide to OS/2 Warp or call the IBM HelpCenter.

1. Insert the Installation Diskette into drive A. If you are installing OS/2 Warp from a CD, insert the OS/2 CD into the CD-ROM drive.

2. Turn your computer on. If your computer is already on, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart it. (If the blue Windows screen appears, press Ctrl+Alt+Del again.) The IBM blue logo screen appears.

3. When prompted, remove the Installation Diskette from drive A. Insert Diskette 1, and press Enter.

If you are installing Warp from a CD, insert the CD-ROM Diskette 1 - Replacement Diskette.

As files are loaded into your computer's memory, you will see messages asking you to wait, followed by a black screen. The Welcome to OS/2! screen will appear.

4. From this window, press the Down Arrow key once to highlight Advanced Installation. Press Enter.

5. When the Installation Drive Selection window appears, select option 1, Accept the drive. Press Enter. Follow the instructions on the screen.

6. If you are installing from diskettes, remove Diskette 1 from drive A when prompted, insert Diskette 2 - Replacement Diskette 2, and press Enter. If you are installing from a CD, you will not see a message to remove the diskette.

7. Follow the instructions on the screen. If you are installing from diskettes, you will be asked to remove and insert diskettes as the installation progresses. Use the diskettes that came in your OS/2 Warp package.

8. After Diskette 6, you will be asked to reinsert the Installation Diskette and then reinsert Diskette 1.

9. Follow the instructions on the screen. After you remove Diskette 1 and press Enter, you will see the OS/2 Warp logo screen, followed by the System Configuration window:

10. Make sure your primary display is Super SVGA (SVGA). Click on the Primary Display icon. The Display Driver Install window appears. The SVGA driver is highlighted. Click on OK.

>> If you have an Aptiva model 530 (2144-66P) or 730 (2144-86P) go to Step 13 below

>> If you have one of the following Aptiva models, go to Step 11 below.

11. At the System Configuration window, click on the Multimedia Device Support icon.

12. The Device Selections and Settings window appears. Highlight Sound Blaster 16 in the Supported Device(s) window. Click on Add and then click on OK.

13. The System Configuration window reappears. If the information on the screen is correct, click on OK.

14. The OS/2 Setup and Installation window appears. If the information on the screen is correct, click on OK.

15. The Advanced Options window appears. If the information on the screen is correct, click on OK. Follow the instructions on the screens until the installation process is complete. Refer to the installation procedures in the User's Guide to OS/2 Warp if you have questions. Go to Procedure 5.

PROCEDURE 5 - Running the UPDATE.CMD Program

Now that you have completed the installation of OS/2 Warp, you will need to ensure that the application programs that came with Windows have the correct program settings.

1. Insert the Aptiva Applications Program Update Diskette into drive A.

2. Insert any CD that came with your Aptiva into the CD-ROM drive.

3. From the Launch Pad, point to the Drive A object, and click mouse button 1. The contents of the diskette are displayed as icons.

4. Double-click mouse button 1 on the UPDATE.CMD icon to start the program. As the program starts, you will see the following message:

Application Update Program is starting ...

5. When the program completes, press Enter.

6. Close the Drive A window and remove the diskette from the drive. Remove the CD from the CD-ROM drive.

7. Click on the Shut down push button on the LaunchPad.

8. Click on OK. A message appears that says Shutdown has completed.

9. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart your computer.

Go to Procedure 6.

PROCEDURE 6 - Setting Up Rapid Resume (Optional)

>> If you want to re-enable Rapid Resume, follow these steps:

To run Rapid Resume, you will need to use the BOOT command to switch from OS/2 Warp to DOS.

1. Close any programs that you are currently using in OS/2 Warp.

2. From the LaunchPad, point to the OS/2 Window object, and click mouse button 1. An OS/2 command prompt appears.

3. At the command prompt, type: BOOT /DOS (press Enter)

4. When you are asked if you want to continue, type Y (for yes) and press Enter. A message tells you the hard disk is being prepared. When this process is complete, the IBM blue logo screen appears.

(Note: If the Aptiva welcome screen appears, click on Go to Windows. The Program Manager window will appear.)

5. The Program Manager window appears. Close Program Manager. The blue Aptiva menu appears.

6. Click on item 2 - Go to DOS prompt, and press Enter. A DOS prompt appears.

7. At the DOS prompt, type:

PS1TOOLS\PS1PFILE.EXE (press Enter)

8. To switch to OS/2 Warp, type: OS2\BOOT /OS2 (press Enter) A message asks if you want to continue, type y (for yes) and press Enter. The OS/2 Warp Desktop appears. You are now ready to use Rapid Resume.

OS/2 WARP TIPS FOR AFTER THE INSTALLATION PROCESS

Now that you have installed OS/2 Warp on your Aptiva, you will want to explore its many features. Begin by using the OS/2 Tutorial. Backup and Restore

Do not use the Aptiva Backup and Restore feature, it does not work properly when using OS/2 Warp. Instead, use the OS/2 Backup and Restore command found in the OS/2 Warp on-line Command Reference.

Personal Desktop

Do not use the Personal Desktop object found in the AptivaWare folder. It does not work properly when using OS/2 Warp.
