Aptiva - Tips about speakers powered by the Aptiva

Applicable to: United States

Question:
The power light on my speaker is not on and I do not hear anything from my speakers.

Answer:
It seems that some of the units were shipped with the power cord disconnected from the system board to the connector where the speaker power cord, (brown plug), connects. Look for J29 on the board.

Question:
My speakers have a humming noise coming from them or radio interference is heard.

Possible Cause:
There are a couple of problems which could cause the speaker hum:
1) A poor connection between the speakers and the Mwave adapter. This should of course be checked and reseated.
2) A broken conductor in the speaker wires or a cold solder connection. X-ray examination of the speaker wires has found a fair number where there was a break or a fault in the conductor.

Answer:
1) For customers who are getting a loud hum or radio interference from the speakers, before replacing the speakers, replace the speaker/power cable set FRU P/N 07H1686.
2) If the problem exists after replacing the speaker/power cable mentioned above, call the HelpCenter and order a replacement set of speakers.

The date code on the redesigned speakers is 6443 or later. Speakers earlier than 6443 have a very low failure rate that can cause a hum problem.

DO NOT CALL FOR REPLACEMENT SPEAKERS JUST BECAUSE OF A DATE CODE. YES, SPEAKERS EARLIER THAN 6443 ARE BEING USED IN CURRENT PRODUCTION DUE TO THE LOW FAILURE RATE.
THE HUM PROBLEM SHOWS UP WITH CERTAIN COMPUTER/SPEAKER COMBINATIONS AND NOT ALL SHIPMENTS ARE AFFECTED.

It's possible that the speakers may be backordered, but the only speakers that are in the channel are the replacement version. This applies to Aptiva Cxx models.
