Aptiva - 2159 Problems changing the screen resolution in Windows 95

Applicable to: World-Wide

Question:
I have an Aptiva 2159 with the ATI 3D Rage video. I lost the ability to change my resolution above 640x480x256 colors. How can I get this back?

Answer:
Some programs such as games and hardware such as joysticks/gamepads will install their own copy of the ATI video drivers. If this happens you may not be able to change to a different video mode. To check if this has happened, follow these steps:

1. Click on "START", choose "SETTINGS" and select "CONTROL PANEL".
2. Find the "DISPLAY" icon and double-click on it.
3. Click on the "SETTINGS" tab near the top of the window and then click on the "CHANGE DISPLAY TYPE" button.
4. Under "ADAPTER TYPE" it should read ATI mach64 PCI (macxw4)(DirectDraw). If it does not, click on the "CHANGE"
button. A list of adapters will appear.
5. Select "ATI mach64 PCI (macxw4)(DirectDraw)" and then click on the "OK" button.
6. Click on "CLOSE" and then when prompted to Restart Windows choose "Yes".
Now you will have the ability to change the Display Settings to higher colors or larger screen sizes.
