Aptiva - Setting up Mwave Aptiva for an external MIDI device in Windows 95

Applicable to: World-Wide

1. Check the cabling.

Only one end of the MIDI cable will fit into the Aptiva MIDI port. The port on the MIDI device/keyboard labelled "MIDI Out"
should have the cable strand labelled "MIDI In" plugged into it. The port labelled "MIDI In" should have the cable strand labelled "MIDI Out" plugged into it.

2. Check the keyboard/MIDI device.

Check that the keyboard switch is set to "MIDI" and that the volume is up. Turn the keyboard on AFTER the computer is finished booting up. (Or, if the computer is already up, switch the keyboard off and then on.)

3. Configure the MIDI Mapper.

- In Windows 95, select My Computer => Control Panel => Multimedia and then select the MIDI tab.
- For the "Single Instrument" configuration, select "Mwave MIDI Port."
- For the "Custom MIDI," select "Configure," and then select "Mwave MIDI Port" for every channel by selecting the channel and then "Change."
- Click on the down arrow under "Instrument" and change for each channel.
- Finally, save this configuration as some name other than "Default."

NOTE: The "Add New Instrument" box will be greyed out as this option is not supported by Mwave.

4. Record a file from the keyboard.
(You may want to refer to the AudioStation online Help as this procedure varies from one Aptiva model to the next.)

- Select "AudioStation" from the "Aptiva Entertainment" folder.
- Select "Edit." This should bring up a new panel. (On some models you would select "MIDI Orchestrator" from the AudioStation folder instead of selecting "Edit" from the MIDI Player.)
- Select the File menu and then "New."
- Select Channel One by clicking on the red button so that is highlighted.
- Select an Instrument by clicking on the number "1" enclosed in a square box.
- Finally, select the Record button followed by the Play button and start playing something on the keyboard.
- Select Stop to stop recording and, then, Play to playback what you recorded.

NOTES:
1.The "Add New Instrument" function allows you to define or add different instruments to the MIDI definitions that are not part of the General MIDI specification. General MIDI only supports 128 instruments, all of which are supported by Mwave.

2. Mwave does not support additional MIDI definitions, which can be described in a specially formatted file called an ".idf" file, which is the purpose of the "Add New Instrument" feature button.

3. Power the keyboard off and then on after the system boots.
