Aptiva - 2144-Y78/Y84 EMM386 errors after recovery

After a recovery of the original software, several statements are added to a line in one of the startup files. When the system is started from choices one, two, or three from the PC DOS 6.3 Startup Menu an error, as follows, will be displayed.

If you experience this problem when starting the system after having recovered the original software, follow the steps as detailed below.

In the following steps, select means single click with the primary (usually left) mouse button and activate means double click with the primary (usually left) mouse button.

Step 1 Bring the system to a point where it can be restarted. If using Windows, exit Windows by selecting the File menu, Exit Windows, and OK. Use the down arrow key to highlight number two Go to DOS Prompt from the Aptiva MENU, then press Enter.

Step 2 Restart the system either by pressing the Ctrl, Alt, Delete keys simultaneously or by turning the power off, waiting ten seconds, and turning the power on again. When the PC DOS 6.3 Startup Menu appears, use the arrow keys to highlight the choice appropriate for running Windows, then press Enter.

Step 3 When Windows has started and loaded Program Manager, exit Windows by selecting the File menu, Exit Windows, and OK. Use the down arrow key to highlight number two Go to DOS Prompt from the Aptiva MENU, then press Enter.

Step 4 At the DOS prompt type the following line, then press Enter.

E config.sys

A blue screen with white text will be displayed. The text is divided into sections with a name in square brackets at the beginning of each section. The flashing, white, block cursor will be at the first column of the first line.

Step 5 Use the down arrow key to move the cursor to the beginning of the line in the [APT] section which starts with DEVICE=C:\DOS\ EMM386.EXE (it should be the second line of that section), then press the End key.

Step 6 The flashing, white, block cursor will then be at the end of this line. The last five statements in this line are as follows:

I=E000-F4FF X=F500-FEFF D=64 I=E000-F5FF X=F600-FEFF

Make changes to this line so it appears as follows:

I=E000-F5FF X=F6000-FEFF D=64

(NB: the last two statements are deleted, the 4 in the first statement is changed to a 5, and the 5 in the second statement is changed to a 6.)

Step 7 When completely certain that the changes are correct, press the Home key, and the flashing, white, block cursor will then be at the beginning of this line

Step 8 Use the down arrow key to move the cursor to the beginning of the line in the [XMS] section (possibly off the screen) which starts with DEVICE=C:\DOS\ EMM386.EXE (it should be the second line of that section), then press the End key.

Step 9 Repeat Steps 6 and 7.

Step 10 Use the down arrow key to move the cursor to the beginning of the line in the [EMS] section (possibly off the screen) which starts with DEVICE=C:\DOS\ EMM386.EXE (it should be the second line of that section), then press the End key.

Step 11 Repeat Steps 6 and 7.

Step 12 When completely certain that all the changes are correct, press the F4 key to save the file.

Restart the system either by pressing the Ctrl, Alt, Delete keys simultaneously or by turning the power off, waiting ten seconds, and turning the power on again. The system will now restart without error.
