Achiever 7000 - Re-installing the original software for systems with Mwave

Question:
How do I reload the original software in my Ambra 7000 series computer with the Mwave adapter?

Answer:
Follow the steps below.

*** ATTENTION ***
If you follow the steps below, you will lose all your data and program files. The hard drive will no longer contain any personal information. If you have important files you wish to keep, please save them before going any further.

For this procedure you will need:
The Windows 95 start-up disk
The Windows 95 CD
The Windows 95 Certificate of Authenticity (found on the cover of the Windows 95 manual)
The 6 Multimedia Modem installation disks

Installing Windows 95

  1. Insert the Windows 95 start-up disk and then start the computer.
  3. At the A:\ prompt insert the Windows 95 CD.
  5. Type the word "FDISK" and press Enter.
  7. Choose option 3 and press Enter.
  9. Choose option 1, then press Enter.
  11. When you see the warning just press the Enter key.
  13. It will then ask you for the volume label, it should be written under where it says VOLUME LABEL.
  15. Enter the current volume label and then press Enter.
  17. When it asks you if you are sure, press Y and then press Enter.
  19. Press the Escape key (Esc) to continue.
  21. Choose option 1 and press Enter.
  23. From the second menu choose option 1 and then press Enter.
  25. When it asks you if you wish to use the maximum available space answer YES and press Enter.
  27. Restart the computer.
  29. At the A:\ prompt type "FORMAT C:" and press Enter.
  31. When asked for a volume label just press Enter.
  33. Then at the A:\ prompt type "D:" and press Enter.
  35. At the D:\ prompt type "SETUP" and press Enter.
  37. Then press the Enter key to continue.
  39. At this point the mouse will work, you can then click on Continue.
  41. Click on YES to accept the software license agreement.
  43. Click on NEXT to start collecting information about the hardware installed in your computer.
  45. Click on NEXT to install Windows 95 into the default directory.
  47. Click on NEXT for a Typical Installation.
  49. Enter the Certificate of Authenticity number found on the cover page of your Windows 95 guide.
  51. Then click on NEXT.
  53. Enter your name and company (company optional), then click on NEXT.
  55. Click on NEXT. Windows will then analyze your computer for the installed options.
  57. Click NEXT to install the most common components.
  59. Click on NO I DO NOT WANT A START-UP DISK, then click on NEXT.
  61. Click on NEXT to start copying the files to your hard drive.
  63. Remove the start-up disk from the A:\ drive.
  65. Click on FINISH to restart the computer.
  67. Click on OK when prompted to insert the Windows 95 CD.
  69. Click on CANCEL to continue.
  71. Click on the down arrow in the date and time properties to select the appropriate time zone.
  73. Click on CLOSE, then click on NEXT.
  75. Click on CANCEL in the ADD PRINTER WIZARD. You will install your printer with the specific disks it came with.
  77. Click on OK to restart the computer.

For the sound card

  1. Insert the Diskette labeled, Multimedia Modem Windows disk 1 into the floppy drive.
  3. Click on Start, Settings, Control panel.
  5. Select ADD/Remove Programs.
  7. Select Install.
  9. Click on NEXT.
  11. Click on FINISH.
  13. At the installation window run the Complete Installation.
  15. When asked for the various disks, insert them accordingly.
  17. When prompted to restart the computer, do not do so, simply exit the installation and then click on Start, Shutdown, Restart the Computer in MS-DOS mode, then click on Yes (Make sure you remove any disks from Drive A first).
  19. At the C:\WINDOWS prompt, type "CD.." and press Enter.
  21. Then type "CD DSP2\SOLO" and press Enter.
  23. Then type "CONFIG" and press Enter.
  25. The first message you will see is just to ensure that the board is installed.
  27. Press Enter to accept.
  29. Use the down arrow to highlight Setup and press Enter.
  31. Make sure the following values are displayed.

    SB DMA.........................1
    SB IRQ...........................7
    MIDI IRQ........................9
    MIDI BASE I/O.............0X330

    COM IRQ.......................5
    CD-ROM IRQ...............NONE
    CD-ROM BASE I/O....0X0 (OR DISABLED)
    JOYSTICK....................ENABLED


    1. If anything else is displayed, use the down arrow key to select the item you need to change, press Enter to open the list of choices, select the correct setting and press Enter to change the value.
    3. When done, use the down arrow key to highlight OK and press Enter to accept.
    5. Move down and highlight TEST and press Enter, it should then run 6 tests and pass them all.
    7. When the testing stops, press Enter again.
    9. Now highlight EXIT and press Enter.
    11. Press Enter to update the config.sys and other files.
    13. Then press Enter again to exit the program.
    15. Once back at the C:\DSP2\SOLO prompt, restart the computer.
    17. You will now have sound.
    20. For the modem
    23. Once back in Windows click on Start, Programs and Multimedia modem.
    25. Then click on MWAVE MODEM.
    27. At this point you will have a window with 2 lights in green, the 2 lights in green should be MR and HS.
    29. Leave it on the screen .
    31. Then click on Start, Settings and select Control panel.
    33. Double click on the Add New Hardware icon.
    35. Then click on Next at the first window, Next again at the second window and finally Next at the third window.
    37. Let the autodetection find the hardware, when done there will be a Details button.
    39. Click on it and the hardware installed should be a Communication Port.
    41. Then click on Finish.
    43. You will now be back at the Control Panel.
    45. Double click on the Add New Hardware icon again.
    47. Click on Next at the first window, Next at the second window and Next at the third window.
    49. When done you should get the Details button again, if you click on it you should see 28.8 Mwave Data Fax. Click on Finish and then click on Next.
    51. The modem is now installed.
    53. Close the Control Panel.

    For the CD ROM in DOS

    1. Click on Start, Run, and at the command line type in SYSEDIT, then click on OK.
    3. You will then see several files, the first on is the Autoexec.bat file, we must add in the following line

    2. DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001 /M:12 /L:D


      1. Once the line is added in close that window.
      3. When Windows asks if you want to save the changes answer YES.
      5. You will then see the Config.sys file, find a free line and add in the following:

      7. C:\DEV\OAKV111.SYS /D:MSCD001 /N:1


        1. Once the line is added in close the Config.sys file.
        3. Again it will ask you if you want to save the changes, answer YES.
        5. When done close all the other files until you get back the Windows desktop.
        7. Click on Start, Programs and MS-DOS Prompt.
        9. At the C:\WINDOWS prompt, type "CD.." then press Enter.
        11. You will them be at the C:\ prompt, type in "MD DEV" then press Enter.
        13. Insert the Windows 95 Start-up disk.
        15. Type in "A:" and press Enter.
        17. Type "CD AMBRA" and press Enter.
        19. Type "COPY *.* C:\DEV" and press Enter.
        21. Type "Exit" and press Enter.
        23. Remove the Start-up disk.
        25. Click on Start, Shutdown, and Restart the Computer and the operation is complete.
