5250 Emulation PCMCIA Adapter - Configuring using the 1.1 Enabler

NOTE: This document can be used to successfully setup and enable the IBM 5250 PCMCIA adapter when using the specified components. This document may be used with other combinations of components (ie. Non-IBM PCMCIA card, Non-IBM Card and Socket Services, etc.) but successful setup and enabling is neither implied or supported unless otherwise specified.

Setting Up 5250 PCMCIA Adapter on DOS Based IBM Thinkpad (Using IBM Card and Socket Services and 1.1 Diag/Enabler Diskette)
1) With the diskette inserted:
-switch to the A: prompt
-execute INSTALL

2) Press the <ENTER> key on the first screen that comes up.

3) Select Adapter Configuration and Test <ENTER>

4) Select 5250 Emulation PCMCIA Adapter <ENTER>

5) Press <ENTER> on the ENB5250 screen. (You will see 10 files being copied over).

6) Choose "N" concerning copying the configuration.

7) Choose "Y" concerning the SET ENB5250 statement.

8) Choose "Y" concerning backing up the AUTOEXEC.BAT.

9) Press <ENTER> on the next screen

10) Choose "Y" concerning the CSDD5250.SYS driver

11) Choose "Y" concerning backing up the CONFIG.SYS.

12) Press <ENTER> on the next screen

13) Press <ENTER> on the next screen

14) F3 to quit

15) Reboot

16) Edit the CONFIG.SYS

17) In the multiple section CONFIG.SYS, the CSDD5250.SYS will load in the [MAX_MEM] section. It can remain there but the driver must be in the [NORMAL] section as well. Put it just before the AUTODRV.SYS/AUTODRV.INI line.

18) Save, Exit, and Reboot

19) Switch to the ENB5250 directory

20) Run HWCONFIG

21) Press <ENTER> on the next screen

22) Select Adapter Type and press <ENTER>

23) Select 5250 Emulation PCMCIA Adapter and press <ENTER>

24) Press <ENTER> on the next screen.

25) Select Test Adapter Configuration and press <ENTER>

26) Choose "N" concerning the adapter being used by Emulation Software.

27) Message should come back that the "Adapter configuration testing has successfully completed." If the card isn't successfully enabled the message that comes back will probably denote a resource conflict. See the below section on resolving resource conflicts.

29) <F3>

30) Adapter Installation & Configuration is complete. Install the emulation software!

Resolving Resource Conflicts
1) To change resources such as IRQ, Memory, or I/O on the PCMCIA cards switch to the C:\ENB5250 directory.

2) Run HWCONFIG

3) Press <ENTER> on the next screen

4) Select Change Adapter Configuration <ENTER>

5) Arrow down and select I/O, MEM, or Interrupt

6) Select and hit <ENTER> on all values that are not to be used. An asterisk should appear next to these values.

Example: 5 3* 4* 6* 7*

7) <F10>

8) <ESC>

9) Run ENB5250 to test that the resource conflict has been resolved.

IMPORTANT NOTE
A message pops up with the New diags diskette, DIAGSUPP.EXE questioning whether the 5250 is in use. To disable that message from popping up do the following on the ENB5250.EXE file dated 2-15-95 at 8:06a
1. Copy ENB5250.EXE to ENB5250.TMP
2. run DEBUG ENB5250.TMP
3. -e 441
4. ????:0441 74.90 03.90
5. -w
6. -q
7. copy ENB5250.TMP ENB5250.EXE
