Aptiva - How to solve problems with the Windows Tutorial

Applicable to: World-Wide

The following procedures are to be followed if you are having trouble with your tutorial.

A: If you have AFTERDARK loaded on your computer, run procedure A.
B: If you don't have AFTERDARK, run procedure B.

If the problem still persists, run procedures C and/or D.

NOTE: An underscore "___" indicates a space (created by pressing the spacebar key) should be there.

Procedure A:

NOTE: This procedure will remove Afterdark from your PC. If you want Afterdark on you PC we suggest reloading it after you have done your tutorials.

1.) If you are in Windows, single click on 'File' (in the top left hand corner of the Program Manager). If you are at the DOS prompt go to step 4.

2.) Exit Windows by single clicking on 'Exit Windows', now click on 'OK' to end your Windows session.

3.) At the Aptiva menu screen use the arrow keys to select option #2 <Go To DOS Prompt>. Press Enter once option #2 is highlighted.

4.) Once you are at a DOS prompt, 'C:\>', type, 'Deltree_Afterdark' and press Enter.
Note: This will remove Afterdark from your Hard Disk.

5.) While still at the DOS prompt type, 'cd_windows' and press Enter (this will place you in the Windows directory).

6.) From the Windows directory type, 'e_win.ini', this will place you in the DOS editor. (BE CAREFUL when editing the win.ini file).

7.) Delete the line that is written as 'c:\afterdark' (Probably the 3rd line), BUT DO NOT delete the line that is written as 'load=ntskist.exe'.

8.) Press F4 to save and exit.

9.) It should go back to 'C:\Windows', type 'win' and press Enter. You should be back in Windows running fine.

Procedure B:

1.) You should do this procedure from Windows. From the Program Manager click on the Main icon, then click on Control Panel and from there click on Printers.

2.) Under 'Installed Printers' it should have 'Generic Text Only on LPT1', select this printer by clicking once on it with your mouse pointer. You will then select the gray 'Remove' button to your right. You will select 'Yes' to remove the 'Generic Text Only' driver. Once that is done click on the Close button in the upper right.

3.) Single click on 'File' (in the top left hand corner of the Program Manager).

4.) Exit Windows by single clicking on 'Exit windows', now click on 'OK' to end you Windows session.

5.) Once at the Aptiva Menu screen make the selection to go back into Windows and run the tutorial.

Procedure C: If the problem still persist.

1.) From Windows, go into Aptivaware.

2.) Select the Custom Tools icon/picture.

3.) Click on Display Select and select 16 colors. You will then click on OK and select the Restart Windows button. After Windows is restarted run the tutorial.

Procedure D: If the problem still persist (Third wave)

1.) In Windows click on 'File' (up at top left corner of Program Manager) select 'Run' by pressing the 'R' key of your keyboard (this will bring the Run window up).

2.) From the Run window type, 'setup' in the command line area and press Enter.

3.) The Windows Setup box should appear. From this box single click on 'Options'. This will bring down a menu that will have 'Change System Settings' highlighted simply press Enter.

4.) A 'Change System Setting' box will appear and 'Display' will be the first selection of the menu, simply select the underlined down arrow button opposite of 'Display' with a single click.

5.) A menu listing the systems current video drivers will appear. Using your up and down arrow keys select the 'VGA' driver, by highlighting the 'VGA' selection and pressing the enter key.

6.) Step five will produce a box that has a '?' against a red background; you will need to select the gray box marked 'Current' by single clicking with the mouse.

7.) After Step six the PC will briefly process the changes and present an option to 'Restart Windows' select this option with a single click (the system will restart windows).

8.) Try running the tutorial.
