Aptiva - 2161 FDISK, Format, and Reload instructions

BEFORE YOU START:
It is important you back up any information you wish to keep from your hard drive onto floppy diskette before administering the following instructions. Any files or additional software you have saved to your hard disk drive will be deleted during the recovery process.
By proceeding with these instructions it is assumed that you understand that the hard drive on your Aptiva will be formatted and only the preloaded original software will be installed on your computer. Any additional software and the files you have saved to floppy diskette can be reloaded after the recovery is complete.
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Insert the red Aptiva Product Recovery CD into the CD-ROM drive
- Restart your computer. If you are currently in Windows 95, use the correct shutdown procedure.
- The following message will be displayed on the screen;
You are about to recover all the original Aptiva software. If you proceed you will lose all personal programs and data from your hard drive. Before you proceed, you might want to run the Diagnostics utility or reinstall key system functions. Press F1 for more information.
To continue with the recovery, press Enter. To exit, remove the CD and restart the computer.
- The following message will be displayed on the screen;
Do you wish to update the Aptiva Software? (Y/N)
- You will now be at a flashing prompt. Type FDISK then press Enter
- You will now have a long message on your screen. The last line reads;
Do you wish to enable large disk support (Y/N)...........? [N]
- You will now be at the FDISK menu. Select number 3 - to delete a partition then press Enter
- Select number 3 - for Delete Logical DOS Drive(s) then press Enter
- Type D to select D: from the list above at the top of the screen then press Enter
- Enter the volume label EXACTLY as it appears listed at the top of your screen then press Enter
- Type Y and then press Enter
- If your computer is an Aptiva 2161-E64, skip the next 3 steps
- Type E to select E: from the list above at the top of the screen then press Enter
- Enter the volume label EXACTLY as it appears listed at the top of your screen then press Enter
- Type Y and then press Enter
- You will now be at the Fdisk menu. Select number 3 - to delete a partition then press Enter
- Select number 2 - Delete Extended DOS Partition then press Enter
- Type Y and then press Enter
- You will now be at the Fdisk menu. Select number 3 - to delete a partition then press Enter
- Select number 1 - Delete Primary DOS Partition then press Enter
- Select number 1 and press Enter
- Enter the volume label EXACTLY as it appears listed at the top of your screen then press Enter
- Type Y and then press Enter
- Press Esc twice and then press Enter
- Turn your computer off. Leave it off for 10 seconds then restart.
- The following message will be displayed on the screen;

The Aptiva recovery utility will restore the software provided with your system onto your hard disk. You shall only use this utility and the recovery cd provided with your system for the sole purpose of restoring this software onto your hard drive. Any other use is expressly prohibited. Once restored, use of the software including your use of Microsoft Windows 95 is subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable licences which were provided with your system including the Microsoft end user licence agreement.

Your hard disk is not partitioned. Do you want me to partition it (Y/N?)
Partition complete. I am going to reboot now.
Press any key to continue.
The computer will then reboot
The recovery process has now started. You will see the hard disk drives being formatted and then files inflating and extracting whilst scrolling on the left hand side of the screen. This process will take approximately 20 minutes.
- The following message will then be displayed on the screen;
Installation complete!
Remove recovery diskette and press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to reboot
- Remove the CD from the CD-ROM drive
- Restart your computer by using the on/off button on the system unit
When the computer restarts, a screen will appear with the following message;
If you want to learn how to use the mouse, or if you need to brush up on your skill, type M to begin the mouse lesson.
Or, if you you to run the Tutorial at another time:
Press the ESC key to exit the Tutorial
Your Computer will now start detecting new devices
- At the Regional Settings screen select the proper region.
- At the Keyboard Layout screen select the proper setting and click Next
- Enter the name of the owner of the computer at the User Info screen in the text box. If the PC is privately owned the company text box should be left empty.
- Read the Licence Agreement on the next screen carefully.
- If you accept the agreement click on accept. If you do not accept the agreement click on disagree
(If you choose disagree the installation will not continue and you will be exited to a command prompt)
- Click on "I accept the agreement"
- Enter your Certificate of Authenticity exactly as it appears on the green label pasted to the Windows 95 booklet you received with your Computer. This number starts AFTER the words ęProduct ID:Ę. Ensure to enter all spaces and ę-Ę as it appears on the booklet.
The system will now install devices, this may take a few minutes.
The "Date/Time Properties" window will appear
- Select the Time Zone that you are located in
The "Modem Initialization Setup" window will appear
Make sure that the correct country is selected.
Click Cancel
The "Add Printer Wizard" window will appear
It is best to leave the installation of printer software till after Windows has finished setting up
- Click Cancel to leave the installation of your printer till later
Setup has finished configuring your system.
You must restart your computer before the new settings will take effect.
Click OK to restart your computer now.
- When your PC restarts, type your name in the space provided, but do NOT type a password.
- Click OK again to confirm that there is no password
Your system will now detect and complete setting up unknown devices and hardware.
To finish setting up your new hardware, you must restart your computer.

Your computer will now restart
When windows has finished loading, you will have the "Welcome to Windows 95" screen.
Setup has finished configuring your system.
You must restart your computer before the new settings will take effect.
Click OK to restart your computer now.
Your computer will now restart. When windows has finishes loading, you will have the "Welcome to Windows 95" screen again.
The "Welcome to Aptiva" screen appears
- Select 1. Home, Office or School
The Recovery process is now complete.
