Aptiva - Networking Support Announcement

Applicable to: World-Wide, World-Wide

These new models1 (Machine Types 2139 and 2153) are the first Aptiva PCs to support a variety of networking options. IBM recognizes the productivity benefits of sharing resources such as printers and files in home or small business peer-to-peer networks as well as the need for some of our customers to attach to a network in environments such as a college campus. These new Aptiva models are compatible with a variety of choices for networking:

1. The IBM 10/100 BaseT PCI EtherJet Adapter (model # 08L2549) provides peer-to-peer networking capability that enables easy file and printer sharing within the Windows 95/98 environment.*

2. IBM has tested Windows 95/98 peer-to-peer networking with SOHOware Network Kits from NDC for compatibility with these Aptiva PCs. The SOHOware kits contain two PCI 10/100 Ethernet adapters with either a 5-port 10 Mbps hub (model # SKE782B) or a 5-port 100Mbps hub (model # SKF812A).*

3. Recognizing 3Com's leadership position in Ethernet, IBM has also tested the use of either the EtherLink XL 10 Mbps PCI Adapter (model # 3C900B-TPO) or the Fast EtherLink XL 10/100 PCI Adapter (model # 3C905B-TX-NM) for compatibility with these Aptiva models.*

Beyond printer and file sharing, an even more important use for Ethernet is emerging: On the horizon are broadband modems that may be capable of delivering data up to 25 times faster than today's 56K modems. Ethernet adapters could provide an easy way to connect to a variety of external ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) modems. As IBM continues to work with both ADSL and Cable providers of high speed Internet services, look for additional details and more information on our networking options for Aptiva PCs at http://www3.pc.ibm.com/support.

** Networking hardware available separately from the manufacturer or its resellers. IBM does not warrant, and does not provide support for non-IBM products. Compatibility statements are valid as of the date of this announcement and apply only to the model numbers listed1.

1 Machine types 2139 and 2153 only.
