Aptiva - Planar problem that gives a 1-1-4 beep code

Applicable to: United States

This corresponds with a report from Chile that six beeps were heard at power-up. A 1-1-4 beep code means that the FLASH BIOS is corrupt. Replaced the FLASH BIOS chip with another (already Flashed) part and powered up the machine. The machine worked.

The planar came in from Chile with the Flash jumper in the write protect position. No updates to the FLASH can be made when the jumper is in this position since +12V is removed from the FLASH. A problem was noted in the OPIE program with FLASH. Whenever the Mwave would do a busmastering operation, a defect in the chipset would cause a decode to occur that allowed a write to the FLASH; thus corrupting the BIOS stored in it. This problem was fixed by requiring that the machine be shipped with the flash jumper set to the "Write-Protect" position (1-2).
