Aptiva - How to determine if hard drive partitions are formatted
Applicable to: World-Wide
1. To View Partition Information: Go to a DOS prompt:
- Click on "Start", "Programs", "MS DOS Prompt", or:
- Click on "Start", "Shut Down", "Restart computer in MS DOS mode." Click "Yes", or:
- Boot with Recovery disk and press "N" to recover software, or:
- On computers preloaded with OS/2, boot from recovery diskettes. From the recovery menu select the option "Go to OS/2 Command Prompt": then put in the 3rd recovery diskette.
- Boot with Diagnostic CD and at menu, press "0" (zero).
2. At the command prompt, type "fdisk" and press "Enter" key.
Windows 95 and DOS
- If you receive an option to enable large disk support, the default answer is "N" for no. Press "Enter" key to go to the "FDISK Options" Screen. Earlier models do not offer this option. Go to next step.
- At the FDISK Options Screen, enter choice '4' and press "Enter" key. This will bring you to the "Display Partition Information" screen. Earlier models usually only have one partition and will have no option for EXT DOS information.
- The 'Display Information' screen will show information on each partition. The 'System' column should show "FAT16" for each partition that is formatted (or FAT32 if you have FAT32 file system enabled). An unformatted partition will show "Unknown" in the "System" column and will need to be formatted. Formatting will always remove data from a partition, but in this case, there is no data to lose.
OS/2
- On the FDISK menu, an unformatted partition will show "Unformatted" in the "FS Type" column and will need to be formatted. formatting will always remove data from a partition, but in this case, there is no data to lose.
