TP General - Unable to configure PC Card Modem to COM 1 in Warp 4.0

Symptom:
Unable to configure a PC Card modem to COM1 on ThinkPads using Warp ver. 4.0 ( Merlin )

Configuration:
ALL ThinkPad Models running OS/2 Warp 4.0

Solution:

  1. Boot the machine
  2. When the machine shows the OS/2 bar in the left corner of the screen press ALT+ F1
  3. Select F6 ( do not auto detect any devices) (See Note)
  4. Open a OS/2 window
  5. Go to the OS/2 \ BOOT directory by typing CD OS2\BOOT
  6. Edit the SNOOP.LST file by typing e snoop.lst
  7. Put a ; (semi-colon) in front of the line IR.SNP
  8. Select File, then select Save. Then exit the file.
  9. Close the OS/2 window.
  10. Open ThinkPad features
  11. Disable the IR support & check to see if the Serial port is disabled as well.
  12. Exit ThinkPad features
  13. Shut down OS/2 Warp
  14. Restart Warp
  15. Open Command prompts and select the OS/2 window;
  16. Type DEBUG and press Enter; .... wait for the DEBUG.EXE screen to appear
  17. At the prompt, type D40:00 and press Enter. Confirm that the first line reads all 0s.
  18. Type Q at the - , then close the OS/2 window by typing Exit and hitting Enter
  19. Insert a IBM 28.8 modem or a PC Card modem of your choice.
  20. Check "Plug & Play" under system set up and verify that the modem is ready.
  21. Open hyperterminal, configure the modem (8,N,1 also set modem speed to at least 9600) and place the port setting as COM1.
  22. Choose a number you know works.

At this point the modem will dial using the parameters specified.

NOTE: When you tell OS/2 not to detect any devices, you will not be prompted in the future that you have turned this feature on. You MUST remember that they've done this.
