Aptiva-PS/1 - How can I add a CD-ROM drive to my PS/1?

There are several options for installing a CD-ROM drive in a PS/1. Most PS/1s can support either an internal or external SCSI or proprietary controlled CD-ROM drive, while some can only support an external unit. In order for a PS/1 to support an internal CD-ROM drive, it must have at least one free expansion slot and one open 5.25" drive bay. If a PS/1 can only support an external unit, there must be at least two free expansion slots. One slot is for the CD-ROM controller, and the other for the audio board.
IDE or ATAPI controlled CD-ROMs may not function properly in PS/1 computers. Such CD-ROM drives require computers which conform to the enhanced IDE specification developed later than all PS/1 models. Although in most cases all IDE or ATAPI CD-ROM drives will interface with the computer and will be recognized, compatibility problems can result with some multimedia CD-ROM programs.
Note: There are some external CD-ROM drives that can connect via the PS/1's parallel port. This type of drive does not require the use of any expansion slots, and can be used on the PS/Notes.
