IBM PC330/PC350 - Audio corruption with ReelMagic MPEG card
Applicable to: World-Wide
Problem:
Popping or clicking in audio files with ISA ReelMagic MPEG card caused by wave file being cut.
Solution:
Turn on Palette Snooping in CMOS.
Reason:
MPEG card runs audio and video. The card has adapter cable to draw from on-board video. The video takes extra time because it has to go from the ISA card to the PCI bridge to the S3 chipset, back to the bridge, then back to the card--it takes longer than the audio to process. The video time is approximately the same on most newer machines but the audio is just enough faster on P166 and faster machines for this to be noticed. The audio is clipped because it is waiting for the video. Palette Snooping, in a very simplied way, allows the processor to store video palette information; thus, it does not have to run through the video path nearly as often. The popping, or clicking, goes away.
