Aptiva - How to set Remote Retrieval password

Applicable to: World-Wide

Both the Aptiva Communications Center software and Ring Central support a remote retrieval feature that allows you to retrieve your messages by dialing into your computer from a remote location. In order to retrieve a message remotely, you must supply a password. This document describes how to set this password in each program, and how to reset it should you forget your old password.

Aptiva Communications Center:
Setting the remote retrieval password:
1. Open the Communications Center. Under Windows 3.x, do this by double-clicking the "Aptiva Productivity" program group in the Program Manager, and then double-clicking the "Aptiva Communications Center" icon. Under Windows 95, click "Start" -> "Programs" -> "Aptiva Productivity" -> "Aptiva Communications" -> "Operator".

2. The Operator program will open. Click "Telephone" on the main screen. The answering machine interface will load. Double-click the entry for the general mailbox in the white "Mailboxes:" listbox.

3. The "Message Center" screen will appear. Click the button labeled "Password" to open the password dialog box.

4. Type your current password in the "old password" box ( If you have never set a password before, the default password is 1001), and then type your new password in each of the "new password" boxes. Click "OK". Your remote retrieval password has now been set.

Resetting a forgotten password:
If you have forgotten your old password, or if the default password of 1001 is not being accepted, follow the procedures below to rest the password to 1001.

1. Click "Start" -> "Run" (In Windows 3.x, click "File" -> "Run" from the "Program Manager"), and then type "C:\PHOENIX\TAM.INI" in the Run dialog box.

2. The Notepad program will open and load the TAM.INI file. Search the file for a line that reads: "0=General|xxxxxxxx" (Where the x's can represent any letters).

3. Delete the letters represented by the x's, and type "HJKHRNHJ" in that space. The newly modified line should read: "0=General|HJKHRNHJ"

4. Close the Notepad by clicking "File" -> "Exit". Click "Yes" when prompted to save your changes. The remote retrieval password has now been reset to 1001. You can change the password from its default value by following the procedure described in the first half of this document.

Ring Central:
Setting the remote retrieval password:
1. Open Ring Central by clicking "Start" -> "Programs" -> "Aptiva Productivity" -> "Aptiva Communications" -> "Ring Central".

2. The Ring Central program will be loaded. Click the "Menu" button on the main screen, and then select (click) "Options" from drop-down menu.

3. From the "Options" screen, click the tab labeled "Mailbox".

4. Click the button labeled "Remote Password".

5. The "Remote Access Password" dialog box will appear. If you have set a password previously, type it in the "Old password" box, otherwise, leave the "Old password" box empty.

6. Type your new password in each of the "New password" boxes, and then click "OK".

7. Click "OK" on the options screen. Your remote retrieval password has now been set.
