Aptiva - How to reseat modem and riser cards

Applicable to: World-Wide

Note: Remember, the 2136, 2137, 2138, 2140, & 2142 systems do not have riser cards.

1. Remove power cable from the back of the computer or from the wall socket.

2. Remove the cover assembly.

3. Place the computer on its side to allow easy access to its internal components.

4. Locate the modem card. It will be the card with two telephone line sockets at rear of tower.

5. Remove necessary telephone cables from card by squeezing on the small clip at the top of the socket and pulling cable from socket.

6. Remove black screw from modem card bracket at rear panel of the computer.

7. Remove card from socket. This can be accomplished by gripping the green part of the card at each side and pulling perpendicular to the riser card into which it is seated. Be careful not to pull on any of the components which are mounted on the card. It may help to pull one side and then the other. The card can then be set to the side. Usually, the internal cables may be left attached. They may be removed if desired.

8. If only the modem card is to be reseated, it may now be reinstalled, being careful to seat card solidly in its socket.

9. If the riser card is also to be reseated, all adapter cards must first be removed. Remove microphone and speaker wires from sound card, and large umbilical cable, if applicable, from the host adapter card. This cable has two retaining clips which must be unclipped from the plug.

10. Remove black mounting screws corresponding to the remaining cards. Remove remaining cards from sockets and set cards to the side.

11. The riser card is the remaining card which is parallel to and plugs directly into the system board.
(On the 2144, 2134, and 2155 the riser card is perpendicular to the system board.)

12. Remove the screw at the base of this card.

13. Near the top of the card, just below the second black slot, locate the hidden slot behind the card. Place two fingers under the card, one on each side of the slot behind the card, and pull up to remove the riser card from its socket. Place the card to the side.

14. Inspect connections on card for obvious damage. Reinstall riser card, making sure that it is seated securely in its slot. Replace screw.

15. Inspect cards for obvious damage and reinstall them into their respective slots on the riser card, making sure that they are seated securely.

16. Place tower upright on its base. Insert phone lines into modem card. Insert microphone and speaker wires into color-coded sockets on sound card. Replace large media console cable to the host card connection, push the two retaining clips onto the plug.

17. Replace cover assembly. Ensure that the cover is in the tracks on the bottom at each side, and that no wires are pinched with the cover as it slides into place.

18. Reinsert power cable to computer.
