Color Flatbed Scanner - Pagis software is unable to communicate with the scanner

Problem:
The scanner is able to establish communication using the scanner utility but the Pagis software is unable to communicate with the scanner. Any other application either does not respond when trying to scan or gives the same message that's displayed with Pagis. The Adobe PhotoDeluxe software can be used to test for the same results as described with Pagis, but if the Adobe software is not being used this can also be tested (in Windows 95) by doing the following:
1. Click on START
2. Click on PROGRAMS
3. Click on ACCESSORIES
4. Select IMAGING
5. Select file
6. Select scanner
7. Select IBM Flatbed 32
8. Just click on the picture of the scanner. If this is the same problem as described above, the same message, as displayed with the Pagis software will be displayed.
Solution:
1. Uninstall the scanner software
2. Delete the scanner folder and shutdown to dos mode
3. In the "windows" directory, delete "twain*.*". Also DELTREE twain and twain_32.
4. If the file scanfx.ini is still present, delete it. It contains the scanner software configuration information.
5. Reinstall the scanner software and all should work fine.
Similarly:
If an error 83 is received after upgrading from the ADF Color Scanner to the Color Flatbed Scanner go into the Windows directory, delete the entire IBM directory, and reboot. The IBM directory is created when the ADF Scanner software is loaded whereas the Color Flatbed installation creates another directory called IBM SCAN. Both directories contain a file called twain_32 so by deleting the IBM directory (thus deleting the conflicting twain_32 file within that directory) the conflict and resulting error should go away. If this doesn't work the Twain drivers must be removed and the scanner utility has to be reinstalled. Neither Pagis nor Adobe will have to be reinstalled.
