Aptiva - Using the DOS prompt when in Windows

Applicable to: United States

When working with DOS and Windows, there can be some confusion in trying to recall whether the DOS session was started from the DOS Prompt icon in Windows or started after shutting down the Windows session. While this is not normally a concern, starting DOS from within a Windows session (by using the DOS Prompt icon) can result in less conventional memory for DOS programs and games.

To easily determine when Windows is running in the background, you can change the appearance of the DOS prompt to show when the DOS session is running inside of a Windows session. You can also add a reminder, imbedded in this special DOS prompt, showing how to return to Windows rather than resorting to rebooting the system.

To change the DOS prompt for DOS sessions started from within Windows, add the line:

1. Open the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and locate the PROMPT line entry

2. Add a new line, after the PROMPT line entry, that looks like this:

SET WINPMT=[DOS Prompt in Windows! Enter EXIT to return.]$_$P$G

This change to the Autoexec.bat file will display the following DOS prompt when you start a DOS session from within Windows:

[DOS Prompt in Windows! Enter EXIT to return.]
C:\>

If you have ANSI.SYS set up in the CONFIG.SYS file (see the article "Colors at the DOS Prompt"), you can have the information line displayed in a color other than white, allowing it to be emphasized. As an example, set the WINPMT line to read:

SET WINPMT=$E[32[DOS Prompt in Windows! Enter EXIT to return.]$_$P$G

The "[DOS Prompt in Windows! Enter EXIT to return.]" line will be displayed in green, followed by the current directory on the next line in white.
