Color monitors flicker in various PS/2 machines

Applicable to: World-Wide

Service Information:
The PS/2 9515, 9517 or 9518 may show noticeable flickering, jittering or wavy images if not connected to an XGA-2 adapter or a 95XX system with the XGA-2 chipset on the system board. Distorted images may also have been seen if the correct device drivers are not installed.

Customers using the 95xx monitor on a system running OS/2 should be using at least version 2.00.1 of the operating system. The level of the operating system can be determined by typing the command "SYSLEVEL" at an OS/2 full screen "C" prompt. Version 2.00.1 is preloaded on certain PS/2 premium models and is also the version that the OS/2 service PAC contains. OS/2 2.00.1 contains the necessary drivers to recognise the 95XX monitor types.

Note:
There is a new level of XGA-2 driver that enhances the 95XX monitor support for DOS, AIX, Windows and OS/2. The new driver is version 2.10. The new level drivers are being shipped with the XGA-2 adapter card option.

If the system is properly configured with an XGA-2 adapter and the appropriate drivers for the operating system are used, and flicker or distorted images are still present, obtain a copy of the version 2.10 drivers. Download the "71G4005 EMTBIN" file to your PC "EMTCOPY.EXE should be used to create the diskette from packed image file.

View the "Readme" file contained on the diskette for instructions on updating the "DMQS" files. The "DMQS" files contain updated information to detect the presence of the 95XX monitors are enable the XGA-2 adapter to drive the monitors at the appropriate rates.

If flickering is still observed after updating the XGA-2 drivers, utilize normal problem determination procedures to isolate the failing FRU, software or environmental interference.

Note:
PS/2 XGA-2 Adapter/A and PS/2 95XX colour monitor hardware and software requirements are documented in the marketing literature for those products.

Note:
IBM 63XX and 95XX monitors are capable of "Flicker Free" operation. However systems and software must be configured to run in the flicker free modes; typically with the vertical refresh rates greater than 70Hz

For information on enabling these modes, please refer to the `Read me First' documentation shipped with the products and the relevant system manual which explains system configuration and software requirements.
