4/10GB 4mm DAT 3.5" SCSI Tape Drive |
IBM and OBI will not provide bezels, or face plates, for the above tape drives. Many customers have requested bezels to convert the above drives from 5.25" to 3.5" form factor, or from 3.5" to 5.25" form factor.
The OBI 4/10GB 4mm DAT 5.25" SCSI Tape Drive was sold as Option PN 74G8631 / FRU PN 16G8454. The 4/10GB 4mm DAT 3.5" SCSI Tape Drive used Option PN 74G8632 / FRU PN 16G8456. The original drive, also known as the Piranha, did not have a removable bezel. The Piranha is identified by its dip switches used for the SCSI configuration block. IBM used a replacement drive with the same Option and FRU Part Numbers. The replacement drive was known as the Peregrine, and can be identified by its jumpers used for the SCSI configuration block. The Peregrine has a replaceable bezel.
An alternative method to identify the drives is to examine the firmware of the device. Please refer to Retain Tip H013309, and files 4MMREAD.TXT, 4MMDAT4.EXE, and 4MMDAT5.EXE from the PCCo BBS. Additional details are included in the README.TXT files from these diskette images. The 4mm DAT Tape Drive with dip switches and a non-removable bezel should have a firmware level of 4BKC-47 for the 5.25" form factor drive, and firmware level 4BKC-42 for the 3.5" form factor drive. The 4mm DAT Tape Drive with jumpers and a removable bezel should have a firmware level of 5AJ-47 for the 5.25" form factor drive, and firmware level 5AJ-42 for the 3.5" form factor drive.
If the tape drive has a removable bezel as identified in the previous steps, the customer may contact Seagate Express at 1-800-531-0968. Identify the drive as a Peregrine and the form factor of the drive (5.25" or 3.5"). If the customer wishes to change the form factor from 5.25" to 3.5", the customer will need to purchase PWPYFC3 as a 3.5" bezel for their tape drive. If the customer wishes to change the form factor from 3.5" to 5.25", the customer will need to purchase PWDATFC5 as a 5.25" bezel for their tape drive, and rail kit PMBP5. This solution is not provided by IBM. The customer must purchase the parts from Seagate, and install the bezels without IBM assistance or support. Information can be obtained by contacting Seagate at 1-800-626-6637. Orders can be placed by contacting Seagate Express at 1-800-531-0968. The above bezels, or face plates, are white. If the customer wishes to purchase black bezels for their Peregrine drive, they may contact Seagate to obtain a part number for their request.
IBM offers 74G8631 as a 4/10GB 4mm DAT SCSI Tape Drive for a 5.25" installation, or 74G8632 as a 4/10GB 4mm DAT SCSI Tape Drive for a 3.5" installation. IBM does not provide face plates, bezels, or rails for these tape drives.
Note: If a customer calls in for support, you can release the necessary information in this document to them.
