Aptiva - Restoring a specific pre-loaded program on a PS/1 or Aptiva computer

Applicable to: United States

NOTE: This article does not apply to the PS/1 x76 models with OS/2 2.1 pre-installed!

Please follow the appropriate steps for your computer:

A. PS/1 Computers with Pre-Load on Diskette

B. PS/1 or Aptiva Computers with Windows 3.X and Preloaded on CD

C. Aptiva P30 Computers

D. Aptiva Mxx Computers with OS/2 Warp - Windows 3.1 and Pre-Load on CD

E. Aptiva Mxx, Axx, 2176-Cxx, 2159-Sxx, and Exx Computers with Windows 95 and Pre-Load on CD

F. Aptiva 2161 and 2162 Computers with Windows 95 and Pre-Load on CD.

G. Aptiva 2140 and 2142 Computers with Windows 95 and Pre-Load on CD.

A. PS/1 Computers with Pre-Load on Diskette

To restore a specific directory follow these steps:

(NOTE: This will not work if you have selected ERASE from the PS/1 Fitness program.)

1. Exit Windows and select the DOS Prompt option.

2. Type: CD\RECOVERY and press [Enter].

3. Type: PKUNZIP -O -D *.ZIP <Directory>\ *.* C:\ and press [Enter].

NOTE: <Directory> represents the program directory you wish to restore. For example, if you need to restore Microsoft Windows type the following:
PKUNZIP -O -D *.ZIP WINDOWS\*.* C:\ and press [Enter].

B. PS/1 or Aptiva xxP or S15 Computers with Windows 3.x and Pre-Load on CD

To restore a specific directory please follow these steps:

1. Exit Windows and select the DOS Prompt option.

2. Put the PS/1 or Aptiva Multimedia CD into the CD-ROM drive.

3. Type: ' E: ' and press [Enter].

4. Type: CD\RECOVERY\US and press [Enter].

5. Type: PKUNZIP -O -D *.ZIP <Directory>\ *.* C:\ and press [Enter].

NOTE: <Directory> represents the program directory you wish to restore. For example, if you need to restore Microsoft Windows type the following:
PKUNZIP -O -D *.ZIP WINDOWS\*.* C:\ and press [Enter].

C. Aptiva P30 Computers

To restore a specific directory follow these steps:

1. Boot to OS/2 Warp, or boot with the Aptiva recovery disks

2. Go to an OS/2 Prompt

3. Put the Aptiva Multimedia CD into the CD-ROM drive.

4. Type: E: and press [Enter]

5. Type: CD RECOVERY

6. Type: RESTORE E: C:\<Directory>\ *.* /S and press [Enter]


NOTE: <Directory> represents the program directory you wish to restore. For example, if you need to restore Microsoft Windows type the following:
RESTORE E: C:\WINDOWS\*.* /S and press [Enter].

D. Aptiva Mxx Computers with OS/2 Warp and Windows 3.1 and Pre-Load on CD

To restore a specific directory follow these steps:

1. Boot to OS/2 Warp using either the Boot OS/2 icon in Windows or the Aptiva recovery disks.

2. From the OS/2 Launchpad select OS/2 window.

3. Put the Aptiva Multimedia CD into the CD-ROM drive.

4. Type: D: and press [Enter].

5. Type: CD RECOVERY and press [Enter].

6. Type: UNZIP SYSTEM <Directory>/ *.* -D C:\ and press [Enter].


NOTE: <Directory> represents the program directory you wish to restore. For example, if you need to restore Microsoft Windows type the following:
UNZIP SYSTEM WINDOWS/*.* -D C:\ and press [Enter].

7. If you are prompted to overwrite existing files, type: A and press [Enter].
The ' A ' must be capitalized.

E. Aptiva Mxx, Axx, 2176-Cxx, and 2159-Sxx Computers with Windows 95 and Pre-Load on CD

Before restoring any file or directory, you will need to download the APTRSTOR.EXE file, available here - .

1. At a command prompt type "APTRSTOR.EXE" and press <ENTER>. This command will explode the file from the hard drive to a floppy disk. Follow the prompts and insert a floppy disk into drive A.


To restore a specific directory follow these steps:

1. From the Windows 95 desktop, click on start, then shutdown, pick the option to shutdown the computer, and then click on yes. Insert the Aptiva Product Recovery CD into the cd rom drive label side up.

2. At the C:\WINDOWS prompt, Type D:<ENTER> (Where D: is the drive letter of the CD-ROM Drive.)

3. At the D:\ prompt type cd recovery\us<ENTER>

4. At the D:\RECOVERY\US prompt type restore \<directory>\*.*<ENTER>

NOTE: <Directory> represents the program directory you wish to restore. For example, if you need to restore Microsoft Windows type the following:
restore C:\ windows\*.* and press [Enter].

F. Aptiva 2161 and 2162 Computers with Windows 95 and Pre-Load on CD.

To restore a specific directory follow these steps:

1. From the Windows 95 desktop, click on start, then shutdown, pick the option to shutdown the computer, and then click on yes. Insert the Aptiva Diagnostics CD into the cd rom drive label side up.

2. When the diagnostics menu appears press the number 0.

3. Remove the diagnostics CD and insert the Aptiva Product Recovery CD into the cd rom drive label side up.

4. At the A:/> prompt, Type G:<ENTER> (Where G: is the drive letter of the CD-ROM Drive.)

5. At the D:\ prompt type cd recovery\us<ENTER>

6. At the D:\RECOVERY\US prompt type restore \<directory>\*.*<ENTER>

G. Aptiva 2140 and 2142 Computers with Windows 95 and Pre-Load on CD.

1. Boot the system into Windows 95

2. Place the Product Recovery CD in the CD-ROM Drive.

3. Click on "Start", "Shut Down"

4. Click on the Radio button next to "Restart the Computer"

5. Click on "Yes"

6. The system will boot to the Recovery CD. When Propted to continue with the System recover, Press <Y> then <Enter>

7. Next you will see the "Terms and Conditions" Statement. To accept the terms, press <Y> then <Enter>

8. Press the Down Arrow twice to highlight "3. Recover Selected Files", then press <Enter>

9. Press the Down Arrow twice to highlight "3. Specify a File or Directory" then press <Enter>

10. Type the name of the file or directory you wish to restore in the box provided and press <Enter>
