Aptiva - Using Windows Terminal to access the IBM BBS

Applicable to: United States

Use the following procedure to set up the "Terminal" in Windows 3.1 for connecting to the IBM BBS.

1. From the Windows ACCESSORIES Group, double-click on the "Terminal" Icon. From the SETTINGS menu
(ALT + S), perform each of the following:

- "Phone Number" (N): In the "Dial" box, type in the number of the BBS that you will be dialing, including any other dialing parameters that may be necessary (such as 9, "," (no quotes), or *70,) prior to dialing the number. The *70, is used to disable call waiting for the one call that you are dialing. To access the IBM PS/1 BBS, type in the phone number as follows: 1-919-517-0001.

This number may be preceded by 9, or *70,. The options "Redial after time out" and "Signal when connected" are used to tailor your dialing session and are selected by clicking on the "check box" one time (Alt + R, Alt + S, accordingly). An "X" will be displayed. Click on the OK button when this is completed.

- "Communications" (C): The proper communications settings are very important. You set the basic parameters of your terminal here. To communicate with the IBM PS/1-Aptiva BBS, select the following settings from the Communications window:

BAUD RATE: 2400 (or the appropriate speed for your modem)

DATA BITS: 8

STOP BITS: 1

PARITY: NONE

FLOW CONTROL: XON/OFF

CONNECTOR: COM1 (for most PS/1s)

Click on the OK button when these settings are correctly selected.

2. Select File from the menu bar and choose Save. Save the file under a name such as "PS1BBS" so that you can use these communications settings for calling the IBM BBS in the future.

You are now prepared to dial the phone number to call the IBM BBS and download files! Simply open the file, select Phone from the menu bar, and choose Dial.
