Aptiva - The IBM Aptiva Computer Remote Control

Applicable to: World-Wide

Your IBM Aptiva Computer Remote Control lets you access the multimedia functions of your IBM Aptiva Computer. Everything
you need is at your fingertips---Internet, CD audio, telephone, and computer mouse. There is no need to search through windows,
icons, or endless menus to find what you want. Simply select the right button on the handset and press. With a single button click,
your Remote Control even helps you manage the space on your computer desktop by minimizing all open applications. And with
the AUX button, you can also program your Remote Control to run applications you select. The Remote Control has a handset and
a receiver. The handset is similar to and works in the same way as other consumer electronics remote controls. The handset is
powered by two AA alkaline batteries. The receiver sits atop a monitor or table. Communications is via infrared light, so the
handset and receiver need a clear view of each other.

Connecting the Receiver

1. Shut down Windows 95; then make sure the computer has shut off.

2. Plug the receiver cable into Serial Port A only. The icon on the cable connector must be facing up, or toward you if you have a
tower computer.

Note: Use Serial Port A only; otherwise, the Remote Control will not function.

3. Place the receiver on top of the monitor with the wide end toward the front of computer. Drape the receiver cable behind the
monitor. The receiver must be seen clearly and easily and must not be obstructed by any object.

Note: Some fluorescent lights may interfere with the communication between the receiver and handset. If you experience this
communication problem, try setting up the Remote Control so its line of sight is not affected by the fluorescent lamps. Also try
moving the fluorescent lamps to other locations in the room if possible.

Installing the Batteries

1. Open the battery compartment on the back side of the handset by depressing the recess and sliding the cover toward the
bottom end of the unit.

2. Place the two AA alkaline batteries, which come with the Remote Control, into the battery compartment.

Note: The positive poles of both batteries must face toward the bottom end of the handset.

3. Replace the cover of the battery compartment by inserting it into the grooves and sliding the cover until you hear a click.

Note: When the batteries are properly installed, the light behind the red window on the handset will blink twice. You can test
the batteries by pressing any button on the handset, which will also cause the light behind the red window to blink.

Replacing the Batteries

When replacing the batteries, use only AA alkaline batteries. Do not mix batteries of different types. Discard all used batteries
according to government disposal guidelines for your area.

Using the Remote Control

The Remote Control combines and streamlines several multimedia functions of your IBM Aptiva Computer, making it possible
to use these functions away from the keyboard and mouse. To use the Remote Control, point the wide end of the handset toward
the wide end of the receiver. You should be no further than 20 feet (6 meters). Firmly press one of the buttons. You will know that
the receiver and handset are functioning because as you press a button a shimmer of light will be emitted from the red windows
of both units.

Standby Controls
This button activates Standby mode; pressing any button brings the computer out of standby.

Mouse Controls
These buttons operate the on-screen mouse cursor remotely, making much of Windows 95 available from the Remote Control.
There is a round mouse cursor and left and right mouse buttons. The mouse functions are designed to complement a standard
desktop pointing device, adding convenience and flexibility to the way you use your IBM Aptiva Computer.

- Drag Lock
Is a feature that enables you to select and move screen/window elements using the Mouse Cursor of the Remote Control. To

name, browse folders, or select a program to run. The program you choose will be remembered by the Remote Control, and
pressing (less than two seconds) the AUX button thereafter will launch the associated program.

- Web

applications to browse the World-Wide Web.

Troubleshooting

If the PC Remote Control is not functioning, perform one or more of the following:

1. Make sure the cable is connected correctly to Serial Port A, the receiver is positioned so that it is clearly visible, and the
batteries have been installed correctly.

2. Fluorescent and energy-saving fluorescent lights may interfere with the Remote Control, or other devices that use a wireless
remote, as well as radios and cordless telephones. Try moving the Remote Control so its line of sight is not affected by
fluorescent lamps, or try moving the fluorescent lamps to other locations in the room if possible.

3. Place the handset and receiver next to each other so that their red windows are nearly touching. Make sure the system is
turned on. Press a button in the handset. If the red light shimmers in both units, there is nothing wrong with the cable connection
or batteries.

4. If the Remote Control still does not function, you may have a software problem. Try using your keyboard and mouse to test
your system's multimedia functions. If that doesn't work, try rebooting the system. For other possible software solutions, refer to
the other computer documents that came with your system.
