Aptiva - How to set jumpers for two devices on a single IDE controller

The hard drives that are installed in the Aptiva series follow the EIDE specification. EIDE allows four devices to connect to two controllers. EIDE has two channels, one per controller. One channel is called the Primary channel, the other is the Secondary channel. The hard drive is usually connected to the Primary channel.
Each channel may have two devices. One is set for Master and it controls access to the channel. The other device is set for Slave. In the Aptiva series, the hard drive is set for Master on the Primary channel. The CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive is set for Master on the Secondary channel.

Access speed is a consideration when adding a new EIDE drive. CD-ROM drives transfer data at a much slower rate than does a hard drive. The EIDE channel must slow down to the speed of the slowest of the two devices on that channel. For example, moving the CD-ROM drive to the same channel as the hard drive would slow performance because the Primary channel would slow to the data rate of the CD-ROM drive even though the hard drive would be capable of a much greater data rate.

When adding a drive, try to match the data access rate of the drive being added to the data rate of one of the drives already installed and put them on the same channel. If you are adding a hard drive, for instance, it should be added to the same channel as the preinstalled hard drive.

The recommended way to add a hard drive is to set the new drive as Slave on the Primary controller. The preinstalled hard drive is already set for Master. Follow the instructions from the manufacturer to set the drive for slave. This usually involves changing the jumpers on the drive.
