Aptiva - 2137 Technical limitations

Hardware Technical Limitations

Hard Drives and CD-ROMs:
1. Hard Drives Incompatible - Seagate ST32531A/ST33230A/ST34340A.
Billable Status: Free
Description:
The 2137 Systems are incompatible with the following:
Seagate Drives: ST32531A/ST33230A/ST34340A
One of the symptoms seen is that the computer will not boot to Normal Mode. It will boot to Safe Mode Only. Also, an "invalid system disk" error appears after reload.

2. Adding hard drive as slave to the secondary connector can cause hang.
Billable Status: Free
Description:
If the customer adds a hard disk drive formatted using FAT32 and loads the AO CD-ROM Driver, the system will stop after "Win" sound is heard. There are 2 workarounds for this problem. First, install the hard drive as master on the secondary channel or slave on the primary channel. By default, the CD-ROM drive ships as slave on the secondary without a master.
Also, the ALI CD-ROM Driver can be used instead of the AO CD-ROM Driver. The ALI Driver is used by default.

3. CD-ROM is attached to secondary port as slave.

Description:
The CD-ROM is slave on the secondary by default with NO primary drive.

Video:
1. Video appears out of focus
Billable Status: Free
Description:
Sometimes the video will appear out of focus if the background is red, green, or blue and the text displayed is white. If this occurs help the customer change the text to a different color. If the customer is still dissatisfied, refer the customer to a servicer for a replacement.

Modem:
1. Modem does not function in DOS Mode Games.
Billable Status: Free
Description:
If the customer has a serial device plugged in and is trying to use the modem in DOS Mode, the modem will not function.
Resolution:
To correct the problem, disconnect the serial device while in DOS Mode.

Software Technical Limitations:
Device Manager:
1. Disable "USB Root HUB" or "Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller" in Device Manager causes the system to halt.

Description:
This problem occurs on USB Hub Driver version 4.03.1212, but is corrected for version 4.031214.
Resolution:
Go to the Microsoft website and download the latest USB Driver (www.microsoft.com).

PC Doctor:
1. Icons appear during video test in PC Doctor.
Billable Status: Free
Description:
Run the Video test of PC Doctor, We can see the icons on the desktop appear on the test screen when PCDR changes color.
Resolution:
Turn off animated icons.
1. Click on the "Aptiva Desktop Customization" icon in the system tray, (bottom right hand corner).
2. Click the check in the checkbox beside "Animate Icons" and click "OK".
3. Run the video test again.

2. Sometimes the screen doesn't clear when testing "Video" from PCDR for DOS or PCDR from Preload CD.

Description:
Enter PCDR from the Recovery CD and choosing Interactive Tests=> Video.

3. J30JP05 (Japan)
In PC Doctor, the system will hang if the DOS Shell option is chosen.
Billable Status: Free
Description:
In PC Doctor, select "Utility", "DOS shell" from the function menu. The user is not told how to access this function.

4. J30UK11 (UK)
The version of PCDR for Windows in c:\syslevel.ibm shows as 2.0.125, but it is actually 2.0.120.

DOS:
1. System will not exit from a DOS Prompt
Billable Status: Free
Description:
If the customer is using Active Movie to play VCD and then opens a Full Screen DOS Prompt, the system may halt if ôexitö is typed to exit DOS Prompt.

2. The system may hang when exiting from DOS full screen playing MM Explore.
Billable Status: Free
Description:
In Japan, there is an application called MM Explore. The system may hang when exiting from the application.

3. File will not print under DOS
Billable Status: Free
Description:
Set the "Spool Settings" to "start printing after first page is spooled", then print the file "C:\Windows\Hardware.txt" under DOS Prompt.
Type: "COPY C:\WINDOWS\HARDWARE.TXT LPT1".
Resolution:
Open the file using the Dos editor, and print the file from there.

AudioStation and Sound:
1. No sound when playing MIDI.
Crystal MPU 401 shows under Multimedia Properties, MIDI Tab.
Billable Status: Free
Description:
Crystal PnP Audio System MPU 401 Compatible is listed under Multimedia Properties, MIDI tab although hardware wavetable, which takes advantage of this device, is not included with the system. This chip is listed in case the user hooks up an external MIDI device through the MIDI/Game port. If an external MPU 401 device is attached, the user should select this device through Control Panel. If the user selects this device without an external device connected, there will be no sound output when playing a MIDI file.

2. If the customer is playing an audio CD and an Mpeg file, then uses Audio Station to play a MIDI file, the customer will not be able to hear the music of MIDI file.

Description:
1. Insert an Audio CD, with autoplay enabled.
2. Run ActiveMovie, Open the file c:\aptdemo\media\Mainvid
3. Open the MIDI player on the AudioStation Control Panel
4. Click Play button, the player is running, but the midi file cannot be heard.
Resolution:
To play the MIDI file, close ActiveMovie.

3. Each time a customer clicks on the Master Volume Control on the taskbar another Volume Control Panel opens.
Billable Status: Free
Description:
Each time you double click on the icon, it opens a new occurrence of the program. Each of the windows are exactly on top of each other. When you close one instance, it appears that nothing has happened.

4. Re-install YAMAHA soft wavetable the default MIDI output is FM synthesizer.
Billable Status: Free
Description:
1. Uninstall the YAMAHA soft wavetable.
2. Install it again.
3. When the system reboots, the default MIDI output is still set on FM synthesizer.
Explanation:
When Software Wavetable is uninstalled, the MIDI setting is changed to FM Synthesis because the Yamaha device no longer exists. When it is reinstalled, the installation process does not change this setting.
Resolution:
1. Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel.
2. Double-click on Multimedia, and click the MIDI Menu Tab at the top.
3. Change the setting to take advantage of the SW Wavetable.
4. To do this, choose Yamaha SXG50 Driver under "Single Instrument" instead of FM Synthesis. US, UK, CE, CF, and GR.

5.AudioStation shortcut no longer works on the Start Menu after it has been reinstalled.

Description:
Uninstall AudioStation from Aptiva Installer, then re-install again, the icon of AudioStation still appears on the ôshow Un-installed programsö.
Steps to Replicate:
1. Uninstall AudioStation through Aptiva Installer.
2. Install AudioStation.
AudioStation remains under the "uninstalled" tab in Aptiva Installer. The shortcut on the Start Menu will also not work.
Resolution:
1. Right click on the taskbar and choose "Properties".
2. Click on "Start Menu Programs" and click "Advanced".
3. Double-click on "Programs", "Aptiva Entertainment".
4. Click on "AudioStation" and press the delete key.
5. AudioStation will also be listed on the Start Menu under "Voyetra". You can click on the icon and drag it to the "Aptiva Entertainment" folder, or use the "Voyetra" directory.

When AudioStation is reinstalled, it is moved from the C:\VOYETRA Directory to the C:\VOYETRA\AUDIOSTA. Aptiva Installer is expecting the files to be in the C:\VOYETRA Directory so it cannot find AudioStation.
Resolution for Aptiva Installer:
1. Right Click on "My Computer" and choose "Explore".
2. Double-click on Aptiva (C:).
3. Double-click on the "Voyetra" folder and click on the "Audiosta" folder.
4. Right-click and hold the "Audiosta" icon and drag it to the Voyetra folder. Choose "COPY HERE".

6. The icon of Crystal 3D Audio on the task bar disappears.
The icon for Crystal 3D Audio will disappear if a CD is placed in the drive after booting to Windows 95 and ejected.
Resolution:
1. Restart the applet through the Start menu.
2. Click on "Programs", "Accessories", "Multimedia" and "Crystal 3D Audio Control".

ActiveMovie:
1. During a full screen ActiveMovie, press Ctl-Alt-Del and the tasklist will not show up on top.
Use Alt-Tab to switch between tasks to access the tasklist.

Keyboard and Mouse:
1. Keyboard can't be used after restarting the computer and demo starts up automatically, except for the " Touch a key" screen.
Resolution:
Delete the program 'Reminder-iqi10705' from the Startup Group.
1. Right click on the taskbar.
2. Click on the Start Menu Programs Tab.
3. Click on Advanced.
4. Click on Programs, StartUp, and æRemind-iqi10705Æ.
5. Press the ôdeleteö key.

2. Cannot type " S (L)" to go through all the MOUSE LESSONS; S (L) doesn't work.
Italian Windows 95 Only
Billable Status: Free
Description:
1. Mouse lessons shows up during setup.
2. Type M to enter the programs.
3. Select "S" and go through all of the tests.

Comments:
The mouse lessons that are part of the Customer First Boot process. The text tells you to press æSÆ if you are left handed, but when you do nothing happens. If you select 'S' for the right hand, it works normally. If you select any other key it comes up with an additional dialogue box emphasizing the left/right selection.

3. J30JP05 (Japan)
The PS/2 Mouse does not work when selecting "restart the computer in MS-DOS" from start button.
Billable Status: Free
Description:
1. Click on Start, Shutdown, and 'Restart the computer in MS-DOS Mode'.
2. Type "edit", the system can't use PS/2 mouse under Edit. The mouse driver will not work when Dos is in DBCS mode.

Aptiva Installer:
1. Some shortcuts aren't removed from the Start Menu after uninstall.

Use Aptiva Installer to uninstall any of the following:

Welcome to Aptiva.
The icons are not removed from the Start Menu.
Resolution:
Manually remove the icons from the Start Menu.
1. Right click on an empty space on the Taskbar.
2. Click Properties. Click on the Start Menu Programs tab at the top.
3. Click Advanced.
4. Select the shortcuts that need to be removed and hit the "delete" key.

SmartSuite:
1. Lotus SmartSuite 97 Registration appears on the Start Up after running "Your Aptiva Adventure Starts Here"

Description:
This only happens if at some point the user has canceled out of the IBM Registration program. This causes the reminder program to be put in the startup group.
Resolution:
1. Right click on the taskbar and choose "Properties".
2. Click on "Start Menu Programs" and click "Advanced".
3. Double-click on "Programs", "StartUp". Click on the "Remind" icon and press delete on the keyboard.
