Netfinity 7000 M10 - Client not connected after hot adding a 10/100 Ethernet NIC

Applicable to: World-Wide

Source: RETAIN tip H164726

SYMPTOM:
A LAN adapter can be hot added to a PCI slot, but the client connected to the adapter will not be visible in Network Neighborhood until the system is rebooted.

The client can not be seen in Network Neighborhood because the client will not connect with the system until the reboot.

PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:
- The system is a Netfinity 7000 M10, Type 8680, all models.

- The system is properly configured with Windows NT.

- A supported hot add 10/100 Ethernet NIC has been added to the system.

- The system has not been rebooted since the addition of the supported hot add 10/100 Ethernet NIC.

- When browsing Network Neighborhood, client(s) attached to the supported hot add 10/100 Ethernet NIC are not seen.

FIX:
No permanent fix is available

WORKAROUND:
This defect is reproduced only on NT setups where the server is not yet started. In order to start the server, an adapter must be installed within NT. The MS Loopback adapter may be installed to start the server and then the IBM Netfinity 10/100 Ethernet adapter may be hot added. See "DETAILS", section below, for more information on the MS Loopback adapter.

Adding of anything but a network card driver while in the network applet during a hot add is also unsupported. For example: Changing machine name, adding a protocol, or adding a service will require NT to reboot.

DETAILS:
More information regarding whether or not the MS Loopback Adapter is installed:

1. If NT is loaded on a Netfinity 7000 M10, Type 8680, system with the MSLoopback default driver ENABLED, the user will be successful in hot adding a Lan adapter, connecting a client, viewing the server from the client, and viewing the client from the server, and finally running a session of LanNT from the client to the server.

2. If NT is loaded on a Netfinity 7000 M10, Type 8680, system with the MSLoopback default driver DISABLED, the user will be successful in hot adding a Lan adapter, connecting a client, viewing the server from the client, and running a session of LanNT from the client to the server. The user will NOT, however, be able to view the client attached to the card from the server.
