PS/1-Aptiva - How can I view more of my spreadsheet file on one screen?

Applicable to: United States

Question:
How can I view more of my spreadsheet file on one screen?

Answer:
Works documents often outgrow the size of your computer's display. This becomes particularly troublesome when you're working with spreadsheets, because you may need to refer to many parts of the document at once. Though you can use the scroll bars or cursor keys to move text beyond your screen boundaries into view, it's often helpful to see the whole document onscreen.

Fortunately, the Works Settings dialog box contains an option that doubles the number of lines displayed on your screen. Though the characters aren't as easy to read in this mode, the 50 lines option lets you display almost twice as many lines of your document as you would see with the default setting of 25 lines. In this article, we'll show you how to use the 50 lines setting, and we'll discuss some of it's advantages and disadvantages.

Choosing the 50 lines setting... To use the 50 lines setting, you'll need to open your spreadsheet file, then choose the Works Settings... command from the Options menu to display the Works Settings dialog box. In the upper-right corner, you'll see the Lines menu. Select 50, then press [Enter] or click <Ok> to dismiss the dialog box and return to your spreadsheet. (Depending on your monitor and your specific Works configuration, the Lines list box may show a setting of 43 instead of 50. If this is the case, you'll choose this setting instead. If Works offers both 43 and 50 line settings, choose 50.)

When Works returns you to your spreadsheet, you'll have to resize the spreadsheet window to take advantage of the additional room on your display. To do this, you'll choose Maximize from the Windows menu, or click the Maximize icon in the upper-right corner of the document window. You'll be able to see 43 rows of your spreadsheet; the menu bar, scroll bar, formula bar, and other standard Works screen features occupy the remaining seven lines.

Works will display characters at their full width, but compress them to half their normal height. In 50 lines mode, all Works commands operate as they normally would. If you don't want Works to remain in 50 line mode, you'll have to choose Works Settings... again and return to 25 lines before exiting.

Returning to 25 lines... To return your display to its original settings, again choose Works Settings... from the Options menu. Then, choose 25 from the Lines list box in the Works Settings dialog box. Click <Ok> or press [Enter] to confirm the new setting.

Choosing the 50 lines setting changes the entire Works environment, not just the spreadsheet in which you're working. Although the overall text quality is not as high, this setting helps when you need to see more of a Works document onscreen. If you have other Works documents open, you may want to return to the 25 lines mode before editing them.
