PCServer720 - Installing a network adapter in NT

Applicable to: World-Wide

Subject :
NT 4.0 on the PC Server 720

This is the latest status of NT 4.0 driver for PCI 10/100:

* Both the Production NT 4.0 Station and NT 4.0 Server now have NT 4.0 drivers for IBM PCI 10/100 ethernet card in the CDs. So the drivers to be used now are the official IBMFE.SYS and other related files that come with the CDs.

* There are 2 parts of adapter card identification in NT: the Detection ID and the Card Description in the dialog box for configuration/diagnostic. With the latest drivers, this is how it now works:

1) The Lake Clark will be detected as 'IBM 10/100 Ethernet PCI Adapter' and this will enable the system to copy the correct IBM IBMFE drivers, not the Intel E100B drivers.

2) For the card description in the dialog box, BOTH the IBM card AND Intel card will now be listed as: " Intel 82557-Based 10/100 Ethernet PCI Adapter ".

There are 2 ways to install a network adapter in NT.

A) When NT 4.0 is being installed. Here you have the option to add the card by 'search' OR 'select'.

B) When NT 4.0 is already on the system and you want to add an adapter card. Here you ONLY have the 'select' option.

IF you are doing 'A' and choose 'search', then everything should work OK but the card will be described as '82557-Based 100/10 PCI Ethernet Adapter' in the dialog box.

IF you do either 'A' or 'B' and choose 'select' to pick the 'IBM 100/10 PCI ethernet adapter' option in the listing, then the Lake Clark will be identified as 'IBM 100/10 PCI Ethernet Adapter' in BOTH the Adapters folder AND the Properties dialog box for configuration/diagnostic. This should also work OK.

IF you do either 'A' or 'B' and choose 'select' but then pick 'Intel 82557-Based 100/10 PCI ethernet adapter' option in the listing, it WILL NOT WORK.

So the strongly recommended installation is 'SELECT' and then choose the 'IBM 100/10 PCI ethernet adapter' option.
