Cannot get speakers to work with NON- 2140/2142 system unit.
Detail:
The MM55 and MM75 monitors are designed to work ONLY with either a 2140 or 2142 system unit. The audio connector on the monitor WILL NOT CONNECT to any other system. Also, there is no method of converting other sound outputs to work with the speakers in these monitors.
Answer / Workaround:
This is working as designed.

Volume control on Monitor has no effect with NON- 2140/2142 system unit.
Detail:
When connected to a system unit other than an Aptiva 2140 or 2142, the volume control will not control the sound level on the speakers (External speakers). Also, the volume control does not change the 'slider' levels in AudioStation or Windows95 mixer as it is supposed to.
Answer / Workaround:
This is working as designed. In order for the Volume control, BASS & TREBLE controls, BALANCE and Sound Quality to work properly, these monitors MUST be connected to either a 2140 or 2142 ONLY.

Monitor not working properly.
Detail:
To correctly diagnose monitor problems, below are some general troubleshooting tips:
Answer / Workaround:
1. Verify no bent pins in connectors and all cables are connected correctly.
2. Insure that the Monitor was powered ON before the system unit was, this enables the system to properly detect and initialize the Monitor and Amplifier card.
3. Insure that proper video drivers are loaded in Display Properties under ControlPanel.
4. Insure that BIOS has the correct TIER card setting.
5. Disconnect the Video cable from the system unit, with the Monitor ON, the MM55 Self Test Screen will show RED/GREEN/BLUE bars with "NO SIGNAL" message. The MM75 Self Test Screen will display white raster filling the entire screen evenly with NO COLOR at all (If screen has color, it may be defective).
6. Run PC Doctor Diags to verify proper video chip, speaker, headphone and microphone operations.

Microphonics (distorted screen due to vibration) on MM55 & MM75 monitors.
Detail:
MM55 and MM75 monitors exhibit patterns whenever the audio volume is turned up to the maximum. The intensity of the patterns varies as a direct function of the monitor volume.
Answer / Workaround:
This phenomenon is caused by acoustic vibrations from the speaker being conducted into the CRT shadow mask creating beam landing errors. The troublesome frequencies are typical in the 400 to 800 Hz range. Improvements can be made in isolation dampening but there is a limit to the current technology. We have improved the MM55/MM75 series monitors dramatically over the present MM50/MM70 series. We are at our limit of technology vs cost for multimedia monitors. Our audio Designer, Bose, agrees that the MM55/MM75 series is equal to or better than any other products currently on the market.

Speakers have very limited bass response.
Detail:
Bose speakers have a very limited range, there is almost no bass in the music.
Answer / Workaround:
The speakers in the MM55/MM75 series monitors work as designed. The cutoff frequency of the speaker cavity design is 120 Hz with the fundamental frequency of the cavity tuned to 148 Hz. We cannot get good bass at these frequency levels. The BOSE Bass Module (on some models) is designed to provide the bass response as a supplement to the monitor speakers.
