56K PC Card Modem Kit - Error message when installing under Windows NT
Applicable to: United States
Problem:
When trying to install a IBM PCMCIA 56K PC Card modem under Windows NT 4.0, the modem comes back with error message '633 port already in use by another device, or is not configured for dial up networking'. Control Panel shows the 56k modem on COM2, 'accessories_phone dialer' also says port in use. Port settings show com2 @ 3f8, irq15.
Resolution:
Try deleting COM Port 2 and re-installing the adapter. You should be able to go into Control Panel and ensure that under Devices - Serial is enabled. Under PCMCIA, make sure the adapter is seen in the socket and that under Properties the device is seen as a SERIAL PC CARD with a driver of Serial.sys. The Resources tab should have IRQ 3 and I/O of 2F8 - 2FF.
You can ensure that Serial.sys is correctly set up by going into Windows NT Diagnostics. Under the Resources tab select Serial and Properties.
