Network Station - Incorrect time stamps on NC Navigator

Applicable to: World-Wide

Symptom:

When using the AS/400 system as a boot server, the following message will be seen at boot time, "Unable to get current time from IP" Where IP is the TCP/IP address of the boot server. The AS/400 system, unlike NT or AIX, does not have a time daemon which results in this message to be expected at boot time. The Network Station will get the time from the AS/400 system, but differently. Once the user authenticates at the login screen, an environment variable will be set allowing the Network Station to get the current get time.

Problem:

Network Station application such as NC Navigator email, or eSuite will have incorrect time stamps. Unable to get current time message at boot time was thought to be related to the problem.

Solution:

The Unable to get current time message is normal because the AS/400 system does not have a time daemon. An environment variable is set when the user logs in which allows the Network Stations to set the proper time. There was a problem with this process which resulted in the incorrect time to be stamped on applications such as NC Navigator email and eSuite. A fix for this problem is available on Network Station Manager Release 3.1.

In addition to running NSM Release 3.1, the following steps must be followed.

Change the OS/400 System Value QUTCOFFSET

1. Type WRKSYSVAL QUTCOFFSET on the OS/400 command line and hit Enter.
2. Type 2 next to QUTCOFFSET and hit Enter.

Change offset to the number of hours and minutes the current system time differs from the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) by subtracting from local time to obtain Greenwich mean time. For example, -05:00 (Daylight savings time in Rochester, MN).

Change set the TZ environment variable on NSM

Access Network Station Manager and select: Startup, Environment Variables and System Defaults. Then add TZ as environment variable with the value that applies to your time zone. For example, in Rochester, MN use CST (Central Standard Time).

Set the correct Time zone for the NC Navigator Browser

The default time zone setting in the browser is 8 hours behind GMT. To set the correct time zone for the browser do the following:

Add this line to defaults.dft : set time-offset-from-gmt = -300 located under the /QIBM/ProdData/NetworkStation/configs directory. Where -300 is the offset in minutes (5 hours = 300 minutes) for Rochester, MN as an example. This will change the browser time to the correct time zone for all users on that system. The number following the statement is the number of minutes away from GMT.

Note: When setting the time ahead of GMT, the statement would be: set time-offset-from-gmt = xx , there is no plus sign (+) before the number.
