Aptiva - Problem found when installing Microsoft Companion CD

Applicable to: World-Wide

This problem affects all models that have the OSR 2.1 version of Windows 95 pre-installed.

Problem:
The following message box, with an OK button, appears in front of the Microsoft Sampler CD window immediately after inserting the Companion CD (Companion CD 0796 Part No. 000-45235):

"This CDrom is from an older version of Windows than the one you are presently using. Setup functionality from this disk will be disabled."

The net results:

1. The message box will probably generate some HelpCenter calls.

2. A user can't use the Companion CD to selectively install parts of Win95; however, this is not seen as a major problem since
the correct files are found on the Aptiva Recovery CD and on the preload in a compressed state.

Explanation:
For reference, here is what is on the Companion CD:
1. Windows 95 Tour (Self-tour)
2. Microsoft CD Sampler (Microsoft ads & samplers)
3. Hover (3D-type game/simulator)
4. Cool Video Clips (Mpeg & other video clips)
5. Browse this CD (Explorer-like function to view CD files)
6. Add/Remove Software (Win95 files, OSR2.0)

The problem is associated with the latest updates we've placed on the US/CE preloads for 2161 & 2162. These newer images
include MS USB support (OSR2.1) and cause a version change. The Companion CD includes all of the Win95 system files, but at the OSR2.0 level. When the Companion CD boots up, it is checking the version level on the preload against what it has. Since the version doesn't match (OSR2.1 vs OSR2.0), the Companion CD prompts the user with this abrupt message. It is a caution message, not an error message. Clicking the OK button makes the message disappear; however, it also causes item 6 (Add/Remove Program Icon on the sampler CD) to be disabled and greyed out. This seems undesirable, but really is a safety device since we don't want the user to overwrite their preloaded Win95 with an older version. Unfortunately, the message box and wording are a bit harsh.

Notes:
1. The Companion CD has never been referenced as the source for files.
2. The CD is a Microsoft contractual requirement and can't be eliminated.
