Server 85 - 174 POST Error and Microprocessor Error in Diagnostic

Applicable to: World-Wide

Source: RETAIN tip H132024

Abstract: 174 POST Error and Microprocessor Error in Diagnostic

SYMPTOM:
Customer will see a 174 error at POST. Reference disk will display 0 MHz for the processor speed. Diagnostics when ran will display the following error:

(slot =0, server 85 system board... error code = 00015400, a microprocessor error occurred at test step 115, most likely causes are Microprocessor, or system board).

PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:
- The system is a PS/2 server, Type 9585, any model.

- The system is configured with one (1) PODP5V83 Pentium Overdrive processor.

- Error codes displayed: 174 POST, 15400 on diagnostics.

- Exact error message: (slot =0, server 85 system board... error code = 00015400, a Microprocessor error occurred at test step 115, most likely causes are Microprocessor, or system board).

- Diagnostics fails.

- Diagnostics affected (version): v1.3

- BIOS levels affected: v1.11

PROCEDURE:
Customer must first contact The IBM HelpCenter at 1-800-772-2227, to order the required socket interposer.

NOTE: EMEA Contact Numbers are available on the web at the following URL:

To install interposer onto processor, first ground yourself, then remove processor and interposer from packaging remembering to avoid contact with the pins. Remove processor fan assembly by gently squeezing together the two retaining clips. Keeping the retainer clips squeezed together, slowly lift up the corner, pivoting it against the opposite corner. When the fan assembly is approximately at a 45 degree angle, left straight up from the processor. Aligning the pins of the overdrive to the interposer socket, firmly and evenly press the processor into the interposer. There should be a slight gap between interposer and processor. Reconnect fan to processor. Remove 486 processor using chip removing tool. Line the blunt edge of Pentium processor with that of the processor socket in the system. Once all pins are aligned in the socket, lock socket release arm into place and secure it. Restart system. System will boot to configuration error. Boot system to Reference diskette.

NOTE: The processor is labeled 0 MHz on reference diskette configuration. Save configuration, and restart the system.

WORKAROUND:
Booting the system to the reference diskette and saving the configuration will correct the 174 error at POST. No workaround for diagnostics, and 0 MHz processor speed.

DETAILS:
BIOS and diagnostic changes are required to fix problem. There are no current plans to rewrite either. The system BIOS will incorrectly label processor, but processor will run at proper speed.
