PS/1 - What is "Customize How Your System Starts" used for on a PS/1 model 2011 or 2121?

Applicable to: United States

**This article is for PS/1 Model 2011 and 2121 owners only!

"Customize How Your System Starts" provides you with additional flexibility in changing the way the system behaves each time you turn it on. For example, you can select whether your computer boots from a diskette, from your harddrive or from built-in DOS (ROM). You can make the system automatically select an item from the main screen, such as Microsoft Works. When you tell the system to boot from built-in DOS, you can make the system read the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files from a diskette or the harddrive.

The following example describes the steps needed to configure your PS/1 to boot from either a diskette on drive A: or from the harddrive (C:). To start CUSTOMIZ, do the following:

1. Select Your Software from the four quadrant screen.

2. Select the DOS folder.

3. Double-click on CUSTOMIZ.

Note: An alternative procedure to start CUSTOMIZ is to select the IBM DOS quadrant from the four quadrant screen. Doubleclick on the entry: "Customize how system starts".

4. At the CUSTOMIZE HOW SYSTEM STARTS screen:

- Find the "Choose where the computer looks for the operating system" heading.

- Use the keyboard arrow keys to highlight the "Try diskette first, then try fixed disk" setting .

- Use the spacebar to position the arrowhead at the entry.

- Press ENTER to save the change.

5. The next time you boot your PS/1, the change will take effect.

Note: If you perform a two-mouse-button reset, your PS/1 will be reset to boot from the built-in DOS. You will need to rerun the CUSTOMIZ program if you want it to boot from diskette or the fixed disk.
