Aptiva - 2159/2161/2162 Booting to DOS mode with Winmodem support

Applicable to: World-Wide

Question:
I have a DOS based program or game that uses the modem. I have an Aptiva 2161, 2162, 2159-S80, or 2159-590 which has a Winmodem installed. How do I enable the modem in DOS mode?

Answer:
There is a DOS based TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident program) shipped with these machines to allow DOS support for the Lucent Technologies Winmodems These are the steps to invoke the TSR in order to use the Winmodem in DOS mode (full DOS mode, not a DOS window running in Windows 95).

1. Click on "START" and choose "PROGRAMS" and select "MS-DOS PROMPT" to start a DOS Window.
2. Type CD \ and press Enter.
3. Type TYPE SYSLEVEL.IBM and press Enter. This will give you one of 3 responses, either MMXUSxx, VF1USxx or
VF2USxx (where xx is a number such as 05). Choose the appropriate steps from below depending on the result you received.

MMXUSxx, VF1USxx
4. Type "EXIT" to return to Windows 95.
5. Close any open applications that may be running.
6. Click on "START" and choose "PROGRAMS" then "ACCESSORIES", then "GAMES" and select "DOS Mode Games with Modem Support".
7. Respond "YES" to the question about rebooting into DOS mode.
8. Let the system reboot to the C:\> prompt. Now simply run or install your program and the modem will be accessible on COM port 1.
