Austin AIX Service Internship Program
In an effort to further improve AIX world wide customer satisfaction the
Austin AIX Development Organization is very pleased to announce
plans for the Austin internship program.
This information is also available on the Web:
http://kestrel.austin.ibm.com
The major emphasis of this internship project is to improve problem
determination and resolution skills in World Trade. Additionally, we
hope this project will lead to an overall improvement in the quality of
information contained in PMRs forwarded to Austin and Kingston. Austin
will work with Steve Zhu to coordinate activities for all participants in
this program. Austin will have enough space to support a rotating team
of 3-5 interns for a period of about three months each. Please submit as
many qualified applicants as you like. We will attempt to expand this
program if more qualified applicants are interested and available. All
candidates must submit a resume and interviews will be conducted for
qualified applicants.
OBJECTIVES
1) To create a high performance team to focus on World Trade PMRs. The
intent is to improve the overall quality of Retain PMRs which
should reduce the overall problem resolution time.
2) We are looking for highly qualified World Trade personnel who will
help make an immediate improvement in our stated PMR measurement
goals.
We are seeking World Trade support personnel who are interested in improving
their technical skills and learning more about Austin AIX support
processes. The intern will concentrate on the following areas:
1) dump analysis/kernel support
2) commands/BOS library support
3) general communications support
4) install problems
5) NFS
6) Although time will be spent on one of the preceding five core areas,
be sure to inquire about other areas being considered.
Seminars and classes taught by developers will be available to the
interns. Some of these educational opportunities are explicitly
designed for support personnel. The interns will be required to
teach a seminar on what they have learned to their peers once
they return to their home country. The internship in Austin will
last approximately three months. Steve Zhu will coordinate the specific
dates, but the intern will be required to remain in their SPOCs for an
additional nine months after they complete their Austin internship. We want
the interns to share the skills they gain in Austin with their peers
back home.
The intern program has the following parameters:
- IBM employee comes to Austin for three months.
- IBM Austin pays for food, lodging, and car rental (See "The Financial
considerations" section on reimbursement policy and limitations.)
- IBM home country pays for round trip to Austin and any return trips
home during the internship as well as any other expenses.
- IBM home country continues employee salary during the internship.
- Intern MUST bring enough money to pay all bills while in Austin.
- Previous interns who would like to come again are encouraged
to investigate opportunities as well.
The following information is needed to initiate the internship program:
1. Charge card name (AmEx, VISA, MasterCard, etc.), number,
expiration date and name the card is issued in. This will be used
to reserve lodging and car.
2. Specific arrival date, including carrier name, flight number and
arrival time in Austin. This will be used to reserve a car for the
intern at the airport. The departure date from IBM is
also required.
3. Local fax number to receive maps and lodging information.
4. Indicate whether you want smoking or non-smoking accommodations
and a car.
5. The intern IBM employee number (don't forget to bring your badge along
with a valid driver's license).
6. Technical area the intern would like to work in. Once this information
is provided, the intern will be notified of his/her office and team
lead.
Financial considerations:
- IBM Austin has the expectation that the home country will
reimburse their own employee during the Internship program.
After the employee returns to their home country, they will
bill IBM Austin with the proper charge codes. Each charge
or debit note must be less than $5000.00. If the charge
exceeds this amount, multiple charges or debit notes would be
required.
- The apartment and car can be charged on the credit card
monthly.
- Expense limitations:
Lodging will be provided as a furnished apartment which
meets the IBM Austin Expense limitations of approximately
$2000.00 per month.
The rental car will be chosen to meet the IBM Austin
Expense limitations of approximately $740.00 per month. The
rental agreement will include unlimited mileage. A
rental car is recommended because the public
transportation system in Austin (such as buses) is limited.
Food expenses will be limited to $400 per month.
Additional useful information:
Dress in Austin is casual. Suits are not required unless you are
meeting with a customer. Jeans and casual shirts or tee-shirts are the
normal dress code.
July to October will be hot (high temperatures will be 90 to 100
degrees Fahrenheit or 32 to 37 degrees Celsius). There will be little
or no rain during summer months. Shorts and swimsuits will be a necessity.
Winter months are generally moderate (40 to 60 degrees F or 3 to 15 degrees C)
with occasional below freezing days/nights. Snow and ice are a rare
occurrence in Austin.
Austin is a Clean Air City. This means that there is no smoking in
the IBM buildings as well as most public buildings. Restaurants will
have limited smoking sections available. Some restaurants may have
no smoking sections available, especially during the lunch hours.
Administratively, the following is required:
Employee Number:
VM id:
Retain id:
Manager's name:
Further information will be supplied as lodging and car are reserved.
Please submit all requests to Steve Zhu, yuzhu@austin.ibm.com
or complete and submit the application form on the Web at:
http://kestrel.austin.ibm.com
NOTE: We want to emphasize that the internship program is a 12 month
commitment. The first three months will be spent in Austin and the
final nine months in the interns' home country where they will be
expected to share the educational opportunities they obtained in
Austin.
