mknod syntax error at line 2

Env:
  AIX 3.2.5
  
Desc:
  Customer is trying to create a filesystem from 
  SMIT and is getting the following error message:

    mknod syntax error at line 2: "\^F\^B,,VX"
    0516-822 mklv unable to create a logical volume

Action:
  We tried running "synclvodm -v rootvg", but this failed
  ith the same mknod message.  We then checked the size 
  and date of /usr/sbin/mknod (size 6946 and date 1987).
  This did not appear to be correct, so we copied 
  /usr/sbin/mknod from another system and then the customer 
  could create a filesystem without problem.
