Toronto, Canada -

ATI Technologies Inc. today announced two new components for high
resolution, true color (24-bit) graphics applications, ATI-88800GX
graphics and multimedia accelerator chip and ATI-68860 SpectraDAC.
Using proprietary chip technology, the ATI-88800GX is the first in
the new generation of mach64 64-bit graphics products from ATI
offering the highest level of graphics performance available.

Full 64-Bit Graphics Engine
===========================
ATI's 88800GX chip supports a 64-bit architecture which provides
the ideal graphics performance to complement today's fast processors.
Full 64-bit design covers all aspects of the graphics data movement
including the graphics engine (to write data in 64-bit segments),
the graphics memory bus (to move graphics data in 64-bits) and
the 64-bit pixel port (with the ATI-68860). 64-bit architectures
provide twice the bandwidth of slower 32-bit controllers. The end
result is a graphics controller that delivers performance in excess
of 100 million Winmarks*, and displays 1280x1024 resolution in true
color at high, flicker-free refresh rates.

One of the target applications for the mach64 is in the high resolution,
true color market. To this end, the ATI-88800GX supports all drawing
operations, such as BitBLT, fills, line draws, and clipping, in accelerated
true color mode, which some other graphics accelerators do not.
The 64-bit architecture is capable of handling the increased load of
24-bit applications, which produce 3 times more data than 256 color
applications. In fact, the ATI-88800GX offers similar performance in
24-bit, true color mode as today's 32-bit graphics products running in
256 color mode.

In addition to providing superior Windows performance, ATI also offers
fast DOS operation, a feature that many accelerator chips lack, as shown
below:

To address the growing popularity of multimedia applications, the ATI
mach64 provides built-in support for motion video acceleration. It will
assist the CPU in drawing enlarged video images and smoothing the jaggy
pixels resulting from the resized video, while maintaining the motion
frame rate. Other products do not offer this feature or require a separate
chip thereby adding additional cost. ATI offers hardware-based motion
video acceleration free with all its graphic accelerator chips.

Flexible Implementations
========================
The ATI-88800GX can be configured in a variety ways, providing OEM system
vendors with flexibility, as well as, lowering inventory and cost.
The mach64 can be used in the following combinations, depending on the
OEM's target market and cost objectives:

* VRAM and DRAM in 1, 2, 4, or 8 MB memory configurations;
* Different bus architectures including PCI and VESA local buses and ISA;
* Graphics DACs, including the 64-bit ATI-68860 and industry standard 8,
  16 and 24-bit DACs

Other features of the ATI-88800GX include:

* Acceleration support for 4/8/16/24/32 bpp color depths;
* Support for refresh rates of 100Hz for flicker-free graphics;
* Built-in self diagnostic test;
* Integrated VGA controller;
* Programmable linear frame buffer;
* and much more

For existing OEM customers, using the ATI-68800 (mach32) products,
the ATI-88800GX is a simple drop-in replacement; it is pin-compatible
with the previous generation of ATI chips. This means that system
manufacturers can easily upgrade to the mach64 without having to redesign
their systems, resulting in quicker time to market and lower development
costs.

ATI-68860 SpectraDAC
====================
ATI is the first manufacturer to design a 64-bit Accelerator and 64-bit
Graphics DAC together. When used in conjunction with the ATI-68860
SpectraDAC, the mach64GX provides a high performance 64-bit graphics
architecture, suitable for demanding high resolution 1280x1024 true
color flicker-free displays under Windows and other GUI environments.

Jon Peddie, a leading PC graphics market analyst, comments, "The demand
for better performance in Windows is driven by the increase in data rates
and sizes. Companies that can integrate the critical functionality of
these components will be the winners in the race to satisfy the users'
demands for low cost, high performance capabilities. The new ATI
controllers certainly meet those needs."

The ATI-68860 is a high performance color palette DAC designed to
complement the mach64GX. Designed to deliver superior speed, resolution,
and color depth at high refresh rates, the ATI-68860 connects directly
to the serial port of VRAM memory. This direct-to-VRAM interface virtually
eliminates the screen refresh overhead and the 64-bit wide pixel bus
maximizes the available pixel bus bandwidth. The ATI-68860 supports a
maximum of 135MHz operating frequency and 360MB/sec pixel port
bandwidth to support true color graphics in 1280x1024 resolutions
at 76Hz refresh.

It adds features to enhance true color applications, such as Gamma
Correction and 24-bit packed pixel modes (which reduces memory
requirements by 25%, resulting in lower cost for implementing true
color solutions.)

Extensive Driver Support
========================
Extensive driver support and unique software features have long
differentiated ATI products in the market, and that continues with
the mach64 family. ATI includes an enhanced Windows control panel,
featuring ease of use and control of more Windows functions, such as
color calibration. WinSwitch, a unique feature, allows on-the-fly mode
switching to change resolutions and colors without restarting Windows.

Drivers are currently available for Windows, Windows NT, OS/2, UNIX,
AutoCAD and special Motion Video Acceleration drivers that accelerate
the playback of video clips on the PC.

Compliance With Major Standards
===============================
The ATI-88800GX Graphics Accelerator supports major industry standards,
including:

* PCI Local Bus 2.0
* VESA Local Bus
* VESA Monitor Timings
* VESA VDIF (Display Information Format)
* Proposed VESA DDC (Display Data Channel)
* VESA DPMS (Display Power Management Signaling)
* VESA VBE (Video BIOS Extensions)

In addition, OEM system vendors can use the DPMS and power down features
in the mach64GX and SpectraDAC to build energy efficient Green PCs to meet
Energy Star requirements.

Pricing and Availability
========================
The ATI-88800GX Graphics Accelerator is sampling this month with production
units available in April. ATI's 68860 SpectraDAC is currently sampling
with production to begin in March 1994. Pricing of these components is
$70US and $35US respectively.

Components and graphics boards that incorporate the mach64GX and
SpectraDAC will be available from ATI. Systems from major PC manufacturers
using the mach64GX Accelerator and SpectraDAC are expected to ship sometime
during the second quarter of 1994.
