Introduction
============

Hi folks.. welcome to the new & improved MikMod soundsystem. You didn't think
I'd release a new version this soon eh? Well I have a cushy desk-job in the
army so I have lotz & lotz of time to work on mikmod these days... and I
still have 5 months to go before I'm 'released' from military service.

You'll notice that this version of mikmod is easier to use in demos and
games. I made some drastic changes in the timing routines, and I fixed a
couple of bugs.. (see history.doc)

Shareware or PD ?
=================

As of version 1.90 and higher (which some people received) MikMod is
SHAREWARE. Now don't format your harddisk.. This only means that you have to
give me a small teensy-weensy one-time $25 US registration fee if you want to
use MikMod COMMERCIALLY. Basically the rule is: IF YOU'RE ASKING MONEY FOR
THE PRODUCT YOU'RE USING MIKMOD WITH, YOU HAVE TO REGISTER. See REGISTER.FRM
for more details on how to register.

- Registering MikMod is for binaries only. You're not allowed to distribute
the MikMod sources or parts of it in _any_ form. If you do want to distribute
the sources on a commercial basis, you'll need special permission of the
author (Jean-Paul Mikkers).

- Registering MikMod gives you the right to sell an unlimited number of
copies of the product you're using it for.. pretty flexible huh?

- Registering MikMod 2.03 means that you're registering all versions of
mikmod between 2.03 and any updates until version 2.99. This allows for
bugfixes and updates without the need to register again.

- A MikMod registration cannot be transferred from one person to another, or
from one person to a company, or from one company to another company.

- Any contributors to MikMod (bug-fixes, new loaders, new drivers) will get
automatic registration for ALL MikMod versions. I'll decide if your
contribution is good enough for registration.

- If you're a very poor shareware author and you want to use MikMod, send
some email with your story :). I'm always willing to negotiate a lower price,
or some form of alternative payment (like sample CD's, or software or Cindy
Crawford videos =).

- Capacala members can pay the $25 US with an amount of condoms of the same
price (unused please, without holes =)

- It's not illegal to register MikMod even when you don't use it commercially
=P

So you see, I'm not doing this to get rich.. but it would be nice if I could
buy a couple of CD's from the registration money, or at least get the money I
spent on buying my SB16.

Example sources
===============

This version of MikMod includes four sample sources:

MIKWAV: Demonstrates the use of the wav-loading capabilities of
                mikmod to use for soundeffects.

        MIKMOD: The modplayer.

MIKCVT: Utility to convert your modules to the UNIMOD(tm) format.

MIKDESC: Utility to add 4Dos descriptions to your modfiles.

Future
======

- Interpolation option for sb mixing.

- My own frontend program, with a file-selector.

- CoKE (Composer Oriented Knowledge Extractor) support.

- I'm thinking of dropping realmode support.. should I ?

- Support for other popular soundcards (WSS, PAS, AWE-32)

- Dynamic loadable drivers, thanks to pel (creator of the DSIK soundsystem)

- Loading .VOC, .PAT, .IFF samples

- Maybe a small demo-game + mikmod music/soundeffects (PaCMAN!)

MikMod/MikMak FAQ (faked asked questions)
=================

Q: I'm losing retrace frames when I use DOS4GW.

A: DOS4GW is slow in passing hardware interrupts to a handler.. try
increasing the RESERVEDLINES define at the top of vtimer.c so your retrace
interrupt will be called a bit sooner.

Q: Soundblaster output stops after a few seconds.

A: DOS4GW can't handle the high IRQ numbers (8-15), so change your hardware
irq setting of your card to a low irq, or use pmodew.

Q: My program crashes when I use mikmod & watcom.

A: You didn't forget about the /zu compiler option, did you? read WATIRQ.DOC
for more info.

Q: My program is getting BiG because of mikmod. What can I do?

A: Convert all the music-modules you want to use into UNIMOD's using MIKCVT
and only use the unimod loader in your program.

Q: Why did you write it in 'C' ?

A: First of all, C is portable.. Guess what kind of modplayers will be the
first to run on PowerPC based machines? exactly.. the ones written in C.
Previous versions of mikmod have succesfully been converted to Watcom C (32
bits), Windows 3.1 and QNX. Besides that, it would have been impossible to
write all module loaders in ASM in this short time. Personally I'd like to
see a version of mikmod running on Linux or FreeBSD. If you're still not
convinced, ask 'DSMI' Otto Chrons for more info =) (if you don't mind a kick
in your genitals)

Q: How about Turtle-Beach soundcard support for mikmod?

A: If you buy me one. I can't make drivers for soundcards I don't have.

Q: Did you know that Red Penguin of HaRDCoDE'95 speaks about 534 different
languages?

A: Yes he's brilliant.

Q: So you live in Holland. Where is that?

A: It's the small beach between England & Germany =)

Q: Do you like being in the army?

A: Uhm.. how shall I put it.. No!

Q: How old are you?

A: I was born 12th september 1971.

Q: Are you a professional programmer?

A: Yes I am, I studied computer sciences and I got my degree last year.

Q: What tv-series do/did you like?

A: Sesame Street, Dr. Who, Blake's Seven, Battlestar Galactica, The A-team,
Automan (remember that?), Manimal, Knight-Rider, The six million dollar man,
Star-Trek TOG, Star-Trek TNG, Deep Space 9, St. Elsewhere, Cheers, The
incredible HULK (mr. McGee, don't make me angry), the Dukes of Hazard, MASH,
Twilight Zone, the man from atlantis, the muppet show, Dinosaurs, X-men, Tom
& Jerry, Bugs Bunny, Wicky the Viking (hey-hey wicky, hey-wicky-hey), Maya
the Bee, Er was eens.. (once upon a time?), Magnum P.I., Buck Rogers in the
25th century, Logan's run, Transformers, He-Man, Jayce & the wheeled
warriors, Ulysses, Space 1999. Pretty sick selection, huh?

Q: Your computer history?

A: Philips G7000, Atari 800XL, Commodore Amiga 500, 486-33, 586-90
